Bregman vs. Bichette: Who Fits the Red Sox Better?

Who knows right now.
In a vacuum, it’s Bichette. Better hitter, younger, similar money likely, that’s clear. But add in all the details and Bregman just makes more sense.
If Mayer can pick up the slack defensively on 3rd I think swapping Bregman’s bat for Bichette makes them better.
Both.

I feel like for the next 2-3 years it’s still Bregman. His swing just fits Fenway. After that is where the contract could become worrisome. I’d be fine with either.
I like the intangibles of Bregman, it was talked about all last year how he kept people accountable. But if he’s gone and the leadership collapses on this team I have big questions about Cora, Story, how much the young guys actually learned from Bregman, everyone should know what it’s supposed to look like now.
Bregman and for me it’s not particularly close. I do not want to see a defensive middle infield of Story and Bichette. Bichette is not so much better at the plate than Bregman that I think the red sox should put up with his glove. Does a move to 2nd alleviate some of that defensive ineptitude? probably, but he’ll still be a well below average defender.
We need to stop worrying about who fits the “budget” and start worrying about who fits the culture…. This city is tired of watching “bridge years”. Give us a guy who understands that at Fenway, winning isn’t just a goal, it’s the ONLY standard.
I’ll take the younger age. Bregs has been around a bit.
Article was before the Jays signed Okamoto so his point about forcing the Jays to sign Bregman is invalid.
Bichette is younger so he is less likely to fall off offensively than Bregman. But resigning Bregman would allow them to move Story to second and have Mayer play shortstop which makes for a far better defensive infield.
We already know bregman can handle Boston, and he brings a leadership quality that is hard to find that to me balances off the fact that bichette is younger
Okamoto did…oooops
I’d be happy with either, but I feel like Bregman is the better fit even if that takes us into some decline years down the road. The real blow would be losing out on Bregman, Bichette, or Marte. I feel like we need one of the three to compete this year.
It was great to have Bregman mentor the young guys in their first year in the big leagues, but how many more years is that needed?
IMO – this is Roman Anthony’s team going forward so whichever player we think is best for Roman and gives the team the best chance to win.
I lean towards the younger, better hitter who just showed up in a big moment in the playoffs.
Why not both?
The answer should be both, and fans need to stop the preemptive excuse making for the team. Its not the fans’ job to worry about if the team’s profit margin will be high enough for Henry to buy an extra yacht next year. They can, and should, spend like the Dodgers.
My opinion would be Bregman. I appreciate that Bichette is likely to have more future seasons as a better offensive player. But I believe Bregman’s defense combined with where I expect he’ll be offensively makes him an overall better fit. Baseball Reference projects nearly identical OPS for both players in 2026. The last 3 seasons Bregman has been healthier (420 games played vs 354 for Bichette). Bregman remains a plus defender at 3B although I could see him transitioning to 2B or 1B by 2028. Bichette is a very minus defender at SS and from what I’ve seen, which admittedly was only maybe 10-12 games this season, he shouldn’t be considered the everyday SS for the Sox. I see Bichette as a DH at this point but I’d be open to seeing wheat he could do at 2B or 1B. In any of those cases, I think his D hurts the Sox pitching.
Bregman’s WAR has been similar to Bichette’s 2022-2025 other than Bichette was low in 2024 due to injuries. For me, all that adds up to Bregman > Bichette.
I feel like Dante Bichette had a bad reputation by the end of his stint in Boston. Anyone remember that and any details as to why? Anyone heard anything similar about Bo? It’s not unreasonable to assume the apple won’t fall far from the tree.
Sign both. It will show us that ownership is truly committed to win now.
Not enough people realize that Bichette is not a better hitter than Bregman
Bichette is always injured
Whichever one they sign. Bregman brings leadership but is old. Bichette is young but wants a longer contract.
I will go with Bichette
It really concerns money 💰 and Bichette is too expensive👎
It always comes down to money. You can’t pose that question without knowing the numbers. Bregman is the better player but at $40 mil per year vs $20 mil per year its a no brainer… Bichette.
Won’t matter since neither are getting signed by the Sox due the Henry’s latest fight for a salary cap or enhanced salary-control measures as part of the next MLB collective bargaining agreement due by December.
My thoughts are both honestly. Move either Story or Bichette to 2nd and have a killer infield but this isnt the old Red Sox. So I say Bregman.
Bregman older better defensively ok bat
Bichette younger bad defensively hits for great average
BOTH!!!!
No Bregman. Not an honest person.
Either/or, honestly. Bichette feels a bit safer since he’s younger and less of an injury risk, but I like the leadership Bregman brings and he’s already familiar with AC and the guys in the clubhouse.
