He fell off as hard as the rest of the team. You can say all you want about the qb situation and teams keying in on the run but something was wrong with him. He had no burst or vision the whole second half of the season.
I Dont know if it was the o line. You’d see some of our spell backs come in and rip off 2-4 gains.
Also to be fair, shotgun is a terrible formation to run out of.
Play action completely stopped being effective and RPOs were no longer an option.
I think scheme, how teams were playing us, and injuries across the O line had more impact than JT himself dropping off. RBs and WRs are both wildly dependent on other players to produce at a high level.
The threat of a rushing QB opens up lanes for the RB. Its that simple. Once Jones’ mobility went, Taylor wasn’t getting those huge holes anymore.
The offensive line regressing and JT slowing down as the season progresses….this is not the first (or second, or third) season we’ve seen this.
I’m guessing there are many factors, but one of them is Steichen deciding he wanted to be the smartest man in the room and relying on his backup QBs or injured QB instead of, you, know, one of the best RBs in the league.
JT isn’t a runner who you can just keep pounding it against a stacked line and he’ll wear them down. He gets his yards on the chunk plays.
First half of the season he had a QB that was cooking. Passing game was diverse, bootlegs were being used a lot, play action was very effective.
Once Jones got hurt, and then later out entirely, the passing game had to switch to much more conservative style, with a lot more shotgun. Defenses just kept the box stacked so JT wouldn’t beat them, and challenged the QBs to beat them.
I don’t think his performance fell off or the offensive line suddenly got worse. It all comes down to Daniel Jones being so great for this offense until his mobility was gone. That cascaded all the way down.
JT will have games with 10 carries and 150 yards and then games of 20 carries with 50 yards. He doesn’t need more touches. He needs those touches to come when the defense isn’t keyed in on him because they are threatened by everything else.
Without looking at any stats, it feels like he hasn’t ever finished strongly. Has he ever had a big game in Dec?
JT is obviously a great player… but that fall off was insane. I think it’s time we find a one-two combo RB for him like the lions or bears. Our backup RBs were finding more yards on their carries. It’ll prevent wear and tear while adding another look to the offense.
I’ve never seen a fanbase hate its star players more than this one.
