[Bleacher Report] Let’s Face It, the New York Rangers Should Be Sellers at the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline

  1. There is no better time to sell than this year with Fox and Igor out. Panarin is 34, on the last year of his deal, and might go back to Russia. There’s no better time to get a good return for him

  2. An obvious, but reasonable take. I doubt we’ll do much of what is outlined in the article.

  3. Panarin needs to be sold if we are selling, can’t lose him for nothing.

I’d assume Raddysh, Soucy, and Othmann will all be available. Parsnips too if any team actually wants him.

  4. I agree with this article. It’s from Adam Herman, so it’s not exactly shocking. I’d be more interested if it was from a writer that had changed their mind, not someone who is trying to change minds.

  5. It’s amazing what Drury has done in such a short time. He rode the coattails of what gorton and JD laid out for a few seasons. And then when it was time to put his mark on the direction of the team, be fucked it all up in one summer. What a guy. What a winner. Little League world series champ. Captain of the worst rangers team to watch in the last 20 years and now GM of the worst rangers team to watch in the last 20 years.

  6. Stamkos/O’Reilly in a package deal. Let the fanbase go bonkers by buying two old farts. Go all in.

  7. I would say they need to bottom out to get a Bedard or Celebrini, but the Rangers are the worst franchise in NHL history at developing elite talent.

  8. If Rangers are sellers, everybody should be available. Including Igor.

This isn’t a squad with enough offense to make legit run in next two seasons.

Next window opens in 28- 29 when current great teams start aging.

  9. It’s a layup to be sellers, but if you read the article I think the more important part is that this doesn’t need to be a down-to-the-studs rebuild.

Panarin gets us a 1st+, Trocheck would net us some combo of 1sts, good prospects, or young roster players. Carrick, Soucy, and Raddysh would add some 2-4th round picks. We could head into the summer with 3 additional 1st round picks in addition to our own probably top-5 pick, along with another young player or two who could make an impact in the near future.

Free agency might be a dud this year, but the past few years have had a lot more movement of big names in trades. Maybe we can buy-low on a guy like Auston Matthews if Toronto gets desperate to shake it up. Another stalled playoff run in Dallas along with an upcoming big contract might make Jason Robertson available. I wouldn’t rule out Panarin re-signing here after a trade either. Regardless of how things shake out, we’d have the assets and cap space to be involved in everything.

Feel free to be a doomer (it’s probably the more realistic take!) about not trusting Drury to pick anybody good with the picks, or that we’ll give out terrible contracts to mid players this summer, but at the end of the day we know he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. I’m not gonna cut him slack or anything, but there’s really no point complaining about things that haven’t happened yet.

To his credit, his two big free agent contracts (Trocheck and Gavrikov) have both been A+ deals imo. He doesn’t have the greatest track record in trades, but at the same time it’s never easy to straight-up win trades when you’re a contender looking to buy pieces. (Yes, I’m painfully aware of why we’ve constantly needed to trade for rental wingers)

  10. they should but also dont like the thought of Drury trading to save his job. Not sure I have faith in him to blow it up for future assets, just see him going for middling American legacy players on the back half of their career

  11. Too bad they have one decent asset to sell.

But maybe one of the five or six 5th round picks we receive when we trade most of our bottom six veterans will turn into something.

  12. This isn’t a personal opinion, but a thought, and it’s that I don’t think we’ll truly be “sellers” until we’re closer to the deadline. With the East as close as it is, I can absolutely see Drury riding this out as long as possible to determine the direction the team will move in. If the team weathers the Fox AND Igor injury and is still very much within playoffs (like 2 or 4 points out), then I can see the FO making a deadline push to get in.

Now, that all being said, the likelihood of that happening is…low. So, now begs the questions, who is available to sell, and what price may they fetch?

-**Panarin:** On paper, the biggest fish, but I don’t actually think he’ll get the biggest return. Because he has a full NMC, he completely controls his destiny, which means the odds of there being a bidding war are low. On top of that, he’d likely go to a playoff team, which means they’re unlikely to offload a current roster player. The return would probably be one or 2 unprotected 1sts (so pick 20 and later) and a top prospect from the opposing org. Feels underwhelming for a top LW in the league, but it’s the reality of a full NMC.

-**Trocheck:** Best trade piece we have, imo. Top 6, all-situations center, locked up for 3 more years after this one on a bargain cap hit. 10-team NTC. A lot of teams will be calling about him—both contenders and teams on the cusp. His return could potentially be better than Panarin’s, something along the lines of multiple firsts, a young roster player, and a B-level prospect. HOWEVER, the question with Trocheck is “will Drury actually move him?” I’m not so sure, tbh. Sullivan loves him (enough to have him on the US Olympic team), he’s one of the team’s leaders, and most certainly one of the “culture setters” Drury and Sullivan are going to lean-on as they try to instill a better culture within the org (the merits of that are debateable; again, not my personal opinion). I think whatever offer here will need to really blow Drury away for him to move him—I don’t think Drury is actively going to shop him.

-**Raddysh:** Has a year remaining at a manageable cap hit, but a guy like him is a dime-a-dozen. Can’t see many teams calling. If he is moved, I’d expect a mid-to-late round pick (4th or later).

-**Carrick:** Has a year remaining at a fully buriable cap hit. Good 4th line player that a lot of playoff teams would value. I could see him fetching a 3rd or 4th round pick in a trade. That being said, he’s one of the few Forwards on the team that steps up when needed, and I could see Drury/Sullivan hanging on to a guy like him.

-**Brodzinski:** Our favorite AAAA Ranger. Contract is expires after this season, on a near-league minimum contract. Don’t really know what the market would be for a guy like him, but I’d imagine it’s a late-round pick at best. He’s another guy I could see Drury holding on to, considering how highly the young guys on the team speak of him.

-**Soucy:** Expiring contract, decent cap-hit, 12-team NTC. I can see teams in the hunt calling about him. He’s been a decent defender this year (though his public advanced stats say otherwise). The emergence of LHD Robertson makes this move more palatable for the FO. I could see Drury getting a 3rd rounder for Soucy.

-**Schneider:** Ah yes, the most valuable dman we have on an expiring and moveable contract. He’s set to be an arb-eligible RFA this offseason. He looked serviceable (not great) in an expanded role with Fox out, and will likely get another showcase on the top pair with Fox heading back to LTIR. Now, that being said, if Drury wants to acquire a young forward to improve this team now AND in the future, Schenider is the piece that must be moved. He’s never going to supplant Fox as the top RHD, and Borgen has secured the 2nd RHD for the time being (though, he has looked pretty bad the last couple weeks, imo). With Borgen being locked-up long-term and Morrow waiting in the wings, it’s tough to see where Schneider lives on this roster in the future. This is the opportune time to move him in a package that brings in talent for a position of need.

Other than those guys, everyone else is waiver-wire fodder. Maybe Othmann can be moved in a “change of scenery” prospect swap. Other than that, the above guys are the ones I can see being moved that have any semblance of value, even if small.

  13. So basically to summarize, they should be sellers but most of their assets are undesirable so the market is uncertain. Fun

  14. Unfortunately, this is the case. But in the off season we need to clean house behind the scenes. Dev staff, scouting, med staff. None of this has been working for a long time, and thats as big a reason why we’re here as what they’ve cobbled together on the ice.

  15. I really think people are over reacting. We’re getting miller and Laba back tomorrrow. Quick is capable of winning games. Losing fox sucks but we’d already been missing him. If this team can be in striking distance by the break then I don’t think they should buy but if you can resign Panarin for 2-3 years at a reasonable cost, why not?

Everyone’s itching to burn it all down and suck for a bunch of prospects and possibly be bad for a decade. One: our GM isn’t doing that. 2: eh….

Not saying we shouldn’t be considering trading 10, trading Soucy, etc, but I’m baffled people just wanna gut this team and send everyone away.

We got so lucky the way things played out last time, it wasn’t our picks or returns in trades that saved us it was having a goalie in the wings, signing Panarin, and having Fox demand his way to us.

This team could very easily retool and fill a lot of fantastic depth if done right. Not sure I trust Drury but I don’t trust him to tear it all down either

  16. Let’s see how desperate some of the fringe playoff teams get and try and get some assets. Too many injuries to overcome right now.

Maybe Drury is drafting another letter to fans?
