Trae Young trade is latest example of an NBA archetype going extinct

Interesting article that says players like Trae are going extinct? Does Melo still have time to at least not be a liability on defense?

LaMelo is 6’7”. Trae is lucky to be 6’. HUGE difference between the two just based off that, imo. LaMelo can actually get in the paint and finish on a regular basis when he doesn’t settle for a jumper. Trae? Not so much.
Defensively, LaMelo’s length gives him a natural advantage over Trae. Now will he ever become a lockdown defender? Probably not. I don’t think he has the lateral quickness for that. But he certainly seems to have been trying more on the defensive side of the ball. Honestly, he just needs to be a marginally good defender and I’d be happy. He has the length that can lend to that, so it’s on him at this point. Personally I think the trade rumors kinda kicked his ass in gear a little. He still has defensive lapses, and he definitely still takes questionable shots. But he’s toned it down a lot lately, and hasn’t been the uber ball-dominant PG he was the past couple of years. And the results speak for themselves.
