Honest thoughts on Kate and Alaa as announcers?

  1. I don’t get the hate at all they’re both a lot of fun and very charming, also it’s just inherently more fun for me to listen to the home broadcast of my team. Plus every announcer does the college thing

  2. Who was Ben Stiller complaining about anyway? I don’t think Alaa was doing the Peacock game, just Kate and Grant Hill doing the Knicks/Pistons game.

  3. I’ve listened to many other local broadcasts for Sixers games. The other broadcaster teams are either dead boring or barely talk about the games. I will take Alaa and Kate any day of the week.

  4. They are a terrible duo, but Alaa is the main culprit. I would be fine with getting rid of both, but at the very least they need to get Kate a new partner.

  5. He’s right. No hate on them as individuals but it’s completely unlistenable. I’m a pretty positive fan overall but their relentless attempts at positivity even when absolutely nothing is going right drive me up the fucking wall. And I don’t remember the last time the broadcast offered a piece of info I didn’t already know. Plus Alaa only has like 20 lines that he repeats over and over again and has for my entire life

  6. Damn am I the only one who likes the brief lore dumps alaa gives for every role player that makes a good play? I assumed everyone enjoyed that lol

  7. Thankful for Detrick exposing the Colangelo Twitter conspiracy but he seems totally insufferable otherwise.

  8. I actually really appreciate Kate’s warmth and wholesomeness. Don’t know why that bothers people so much. We are all way too cynical now.

Alaa at this point I’ve accepted who he is and will never change. I’m just tired of all the same stories now. I’d like Marc Jackson to replace him so we’d get AI and 2000’s era stories

  9. Kate is fine. She replaced arguably the best play by play announcer in the NBA and Zumoff was young. Thought we would be listening to him for years and years to come. She’s been fighting a losing battle since she got hired. She’s not great, she’s just fine. Alaa also, to me, is fine. Neither bother me and the players seem to like both. I think Kate has a good rapport with the team but I want an announcer that is honest all the time while still being a fan and that also knows about the league as a whole which I don’t get any feeling she does. She never talks about the season the other team is having or anything like that. Overall, with pregame and postgame included, I’d give the whole operation a C-

  10. I love them both, but especially Kate. There’s a reason she’s getting opportunities to call non-Sixers games

  11. I like Kate, I never really liked Alaa. I don’t think the combination pairs well either.

  12. Literally every other teams local announcers are absolute butt cheeks compared to Kate and Alaa. I would much rather them than listen to some dipshit announcer talking about how crippled Joel is every time he touches the ball or garsh Tyrese Maxey is fast huh

  13. “Woooooow” – Alaa whenever a 3 that is more than a few feet beyond the arc is put up

  14. We’re complaining about brickin for chicken now? Literally the most hype part of any given game lol

  15. I tend to agree with that take. My other sample of local team announcers is primarily the Knicks broadcast & feel Clyde is just as homerish & corny as Alaa. Basically saying most home broadcast teams are probably hard listens which is why national games tend to be superior watches.

I think Kate is skilled, knowledgeable and professional but she dips into the same catchphrases and patterns that gets annoying. Between the two of them if I never have to hear “the big fella” or “__ points and counting” (even with 3.6 left in the game) I’d be much happier.

  16. I think I just want different things from a broadcast crew than the Bens here.

When I listen to a local broadcast (hockey, baseball, basketball) of my favorite team, I kind of enjoy the vibe of watching along with fellow fans of the team. Put another way, the way Detrick ends his second post “Together, they’re masterful at spending two hours yukking it up” I see as a feature not a bug.

It’s a long as season – taking the thing super serious the whole way would be way more tiresome for me. Breaking it up with the occasional national broadcast is fine – especially for bigger games – but when they’re taking on the Wizards on Wednesday in January, yukk away I say.

  17. They’re nice people so I feel bad saying it but they make the broadcast worse. I need both of them to go, we need a fresh start. Although Tom McGinnis who does radio play by play is very good.

  18. it always surprises me the strong feelings people have about broadcasters, also this is funny cause people seem to love kruk bringing nothing to the Phillies broadcast but yucking it up

  19. Only a bulit true. The only final thing that Kate has to master is that you just have to ignore like 40% of the random bullshit Alaa says. Zumoff always knew the good Alaa threads to pull on and get more and the dumber stuff that you can just ignore.

  20. kate would have been good if she got to cut her teeth with a real color guy. alaa is 60/60 of local tv guys (might be 184/184 tbh but i havent seen every hockey and baseball team) game has completely passed him by and his personality is not likable.

  21. Did Kate and Alaa even do the Peacock game? I presumed they didn’t but like most couldn’t watch. I can’t imagine Stiller as a lifelong New Yorker was speaking about them. Ben Detrick breaking the Colangelo thing was cool all those years ago, but I’d say he’s hardly the final word on all things Sixers. He’s basically used that one story to create a podcast career, which is about as cliche as it gets.

All local announcers are chummy and homers. It’s literally part of the gig. Kate and Alaa are exponentially more likable than many I’ve heard in other markets. (Those Celtics guys are unbearable, though as a Sixers fan I’m sure I’m biased.) This feels way more like “podcast bro trying to be edgy for the clicks” than anything else.

  22. Alaa is way too biased with his takes in favor of the Sixers on fouls to the point where I can’t believe that he’s played professional basketball before. Love Kate though.

  23. They kinda suck, not gonna lie. I’ve been watching a bunch of other teams broadcasts this season, not necessarily by choice and it’s pretty much the same for any other local broadcast, they gas up their guys and lament on the other teams players. Seems like a lot of people just casually talk. Zumoff will never be replaced.

To be honest, I thought Boston’s broadcast with White Mamba was pretty good and he was constantly gassing up VJ and Maxey.
