Slow offseason and saw a few people on this sub do this so why not give it a go?

  1. Loved everything about Moose, just tactical approach to pitching. Wish he could’ve gotten a ring.

  2. Loved him, one of my favorites to watch. Just a shame that his entire Yankee career was in between championships.

  3. I liked him. It’s a shame he pitched in between World Series titles for us. One of the most underrated pitchers of the past 30 years

  4. Probably my favorite Yankee pitcher of all time. Did what was asked of him. His last season was magical as well. Shame he didnt stick around in 2009, god knows we could have needed another starter during that postseason run

  5. I wish I appreciated him more in the moment, he had the unfortunate luck to join immediately following the last championship of the dynasty and became the face of the mid-2000’s underperforming rotations

  6. Love him dearly, maybe my favorite yankee pitcher of all time. Wish he had a ring and that perfect game. Hope moose is doing well

  7. He’s a Yankee. An absolute gamer who figured out a way to reinvent himself when things got rocky in 2007. Just a shame that he has one of the worst times tenures as a Yankee. He joined the year after they won (2000) then retired the year right before they won (2009).

  8. I think he was appreciated by the fans but somewhat under appreciated. He was a lot more dominant than people gave him credit for. I think he’s similar to Giambi where he would have been more appreciated if he played today.

I do remember him rubbing some fans the wrong way coming off as detached from the team. But he was also amongst one of the most vocal dudes in the clubhouse questioning Carl Pavano’s desire to want to help the team. The dude cared he was just extremely introverted and preferred to do his own thing.

I do remember rooting for him to win the 5th spot in the rotation in 08. My reasoning was if there’s anyone smart and crafty enough to make it work with diminished stuff it’s Mike Mussina.

  9. He was my favorite Yankees starting pitcher during that era, and I really wish he got at least one ring (and a perfect game) with them

  10. Moose was the man. My favorite game was a game he pitched against Pedro in early 2000’s and Torre came out to take him out in the 7th and he pointed at him and said sit back down and Torre almost fell back into the dug out. Don’t make them like him anymore.

  11. Love him but poor guy.

Won won world series from 1996, 1998-2000

Had a break from 2001-2008. Then won in 2009.

Moose was on the team from 2001-2008.

Never had 20 wins and 1 batter away from a perfect game.

Update: forgot his last season he had 20 wins

  12. He was my favorite player growing up! I still have the jersey my dad got me for my 13th bday in 2001. It survived a house fire!

  13. Him sending Torre back to the dugout when Torre tried to take him out is one of my favorite Yankee memories

  14. He was my favorite pitcher when I was a kid and I used to try to emulate his knuckle curve. Still an all time fav player, and I like picking 35 in MLB the show for him.

  15. Loved his last year when he stopped trying to be a power pitcher and turned into an artist. I think he had another couple years easy.

  16. Still remember when Joe Torre went to take him out of a game and he told him to sit his ass back down. Classic Yankee moment.

He said: “No, stay there!” To throw a complete game vs Detroit where the Yankees led by 5.

  17. My favorite free agent pitcher we signed until we got CC. Should of won a WS but he retired early

  18. Great pitcher. Vastly underrated. Pitched to win, not to impress. The media never really loved him because he was very introverted and couldn’t stand interviews.

  19. I like him. His brother used to be my baseball coach. He’d help us out all the time

  20. One of my all time favorites. He saved game 7 in the ALCS against Boston. One of the most clutch out of the bullpen performances in Yankee history.

  21. He’s one of those guys that came to win a ring. He exceeded expectations and the Yankees front office failed to build a winning team while he was there.

  22. One of the most underrated pitchers I’ve ever seen and it’s criminal he never won a ring.

  23. Always liked Mussina. He deserved a ring.

I remember when they lost to Pudge and the Marlins. I absolutely melted down.

  24. He was an absolute stud of a #2-3 starter for us and an under the radar consistent presence with okay to very good ERA’s and just a fucking gamer, a fucking grinder out there. He tried to push through some tough situations- but he was the #2-3 starter on clubs that didn’t have the other necessary pieces to win the world series and he was the exact standard of the pitcher who’s nearly perfect until he isn’t- the guy who’s lights out until that one inning where he can’t find the strike zone and walks some guys and then he served up a meatball for a guy to sashay into a 3 or 4 run home run and we got fucked.

But that’s not Moose’s fault- that’s the manager’s fault for not pulling him at the right moment and the GM’s fault for getting all these older relievers who’d had their peak and were Yankees right when they’d burned out and needed to retire, like Paul Quantrill, whom the Yankees leaned on heavily and between being over the hill and over worked, they’d bury the Yankees in the late innings after Mussina had stayed in for one or two innings or one or two batters too long… and the results were the results.

Mussina got fucked by elements beyond his control, but Mussina himself was as great a pitcher as we could have asked of him.

  25. Moose was one of my favorites. I used to mimic Moose’s delivery throwing at my pitch-back in the backyard. That crouch he did when he landed always ensured he was in prime position to field a batter ball.

He struggled for a hot minute toward the end of his career, but 2008 was special. Wish he stuck around for 2009.

  26. I was able to earn a scholarship because of Mike Mussina. I was obsessed with Andy Pettitte’s slider so I copied it and had a disgusting slider to go with my pretty decent fastball. I was working on a split but it sucked, if it made it to the plate it was an absolute beach ball. Then we got Mussina and I got to see the knuckle curveball. I was confident enough to use it regularly my senior year and went from 5th pitcher on a last place team to ace of a last place team.

I didn’t think I’d be able to play in college but a former teammate of mine was trying out and he convinced me. The pitching coach used to throw that pitch for the Dodgers. “Not bad, but we’re going to have to work on it.” 4 year relief pitcher, final 2 season I closed. Couple of spot starts, only one went well.

  27. One of my favorite Yankees (and sports people) ever. As a big time crossword doer, loved seeing him in the crossword documentary randomly. Hate that he never won a ring.

  28. IDK if anyone else appreciates this about Moose, but back then they played 18 games against each team in their division. Moose pitched his whole career (’91- 08) in the AL East. A division that during his career featured the wild card team 10 of 14 years, 11 WS appearances, and 8x WS Champs. He had a record of 94-59 (75-52 without TB) with and era of 3.57 1065ks, in 202 appearances against the AL East. Dude pitched 37% of his total games against the toughest division of all time in a two decade run. Aaaaand!!! Owned it! Finished well over 100 games over .500 with an ERA that was frankly unbelievable considering who he pitched against. He didn’t win a ring, but had a 3.47 ERA in the postseason.  There may have been better pitchers in his era, but none of them had his guts. Dude was one tough sumbitch.

  29. Loved him, his career was so close to being a fairytale. 1 out away from a perfect game and retired a year short of a World Series

  30. He was the man whenever he pitched you knew u were gonna win. He was clutch and he pitched in the roid era and he literally was up against juggernauts don’t know how he made it look ez

  31. One of my absolutely favorite Yankees ever. I think him losing his perfect game vs the Sox on the last out is my second most gut-wrenching Yankee fan moment after the 2001 WS. Sad he didn’t get a ring.
