Arizona Cardinals SHOULD NOT Pursue John Harbaugh to Fill Head Coaching Vacancy

In this episode of Locked On Cardinals, Alex Clancy dives deep into the ever-expanding list of head coaching candidates for the Arizona Cardinals, analyzing who is in the mix and, importantly, who shouldn’t be. One of the hottest names out there is John Harbaugh, but Alex Clancy makes a compelling case for why the Cardinals should NOT hire him, going beyond wins and playoff appearances to explore his coaching approach, history, and fit with the team’s direction.

The episode breaks down Harbaugh’s coaching resume, discussing his strengths as a leader, the impressive coordinators he’s worked with, and the challenges of being a CEO-type head coach in today’s NFL. Alex Clancy weighs the price tag, Harbaugh’s age, and the evolution of the league toward younger, more innovative playcallers. Throughout, the argument is made for seeking a fresher perspective and a coach who’s more malleable for a long-term rebuild.

The show transitions to a detailed review of all the coaching candidates the Cardinals have requested interviews with, including Vance Joseph, Anthony Weaver, Matt Nagy, Raheem Morris, Robert Saleh, Clint Kubiak, and more. Alex Clancy offers rapid-fire analysis—highlighting pros, cons, and what each candidate could mean for the future of the franchise.

Later, the conversation shifts to the ongoing quarterback debate: could Kyler Murray be brought back under a new head coach? Alex Clancy unpacks the rumors, the practicality, contract implications, and what it would mean for the team’s direction. With honest thoughts about the 2024 draft class, coaching philosophy, and the realities of NFL roster-building, Alex Clancy provides an unfiltered look at all the possible directions the Arizona Cardinals could take.

Whether you’re a die-hard Cardinals fan or seriously invested in NFL coaching carousel drama, this episode is packed with sharp analysis, inside scoops, and future-focused discussion about one of the league’s most intriguing franchises. Let’s discuss.

  1. If Bidwell would agree to concede some control to a proven commodity and open up the checkbook AND if the organization had someone who actually knew how to sell something; there's a very compelling pitch to be made for a proven head coach to join the Cardinals. Unfortunately, Bidwell is probably always going to be Bidwell and they don't have anyone who could sell ***y in San Quintin in this organization. So .. looking like another crapshoot most likely. That really sounded negative but if I wasn't a football drama junkie, I'd never be a Cardinals fan in the first place. Love it!

  2. There’s better options!? 🤣🤣 maybe Rob S, very small chance kubiak, you are speaking on John harbaugh like some old egotistical my way or the highway type dude. I will trust the he could put together a winning staff and have nothing but respect from the locker room. That’s what it comes down to. I can care less if he’s not calling the plays.

  3. Is this whole podcast a long, slow joke? You list a number of stats, coordinators all light years ahead of what the cards have had. Then talk about stability and how well a franchise was run and then say the guy who was a huge piece in that for 18 years would be a bad hire. What?! THEN list a bunch of meh unproven candidates.
Everything said were great reasons to hire Harbaugh.

Oh and am pretty sure Sean Payton, Mike Vrabel and McDermott are still employed by playoff teams…

  4. Buy N Large, Kyler is a safety net for the Cards. If you don't get the QB you want in the draft or in FA and if you can't find a good trade, then you bring him back. He's always had the QB1 spot since he came in the league. Make him earn his job in training camp.

  5. So he knows how to pick a great staff and wins, but nah, "don't hire that guy!" WTF are you talking about? I listened to post show after post show of you complaining about Drew Petzing. They should do whatever they can to hire him and let him build his staff

  6. C’mon Alex. Hearing you dismiss Harbaugh with a proven record, after hearing you constantly defend JG for 3 years is silly. Winning matters. WINNING IS ALL THAT MATTERS.

  7. “20 reasons not to hire the guy with a proven track record”, so let’s hire an unproven guy! Sounds like the JG hire! We didn’t give Sean Payton what he wanted so we ended up with Dollar Tree coach JG! But we won the ‘Culture Bowl’!

  8. I literally always disagree with your take. But I think that’s ok, interesting to hear other people’s views. But I really do think you are wrong here. Either way keep it up. Oh and I don’t think you need to worry about harbaugh being hired.

  9. we all know the cardinals won't even seriously consider Harbaugh or stefanski rather go after horrible coaches like weaver selah or Joseph we always scrape the bottom of the barrel macginnis kingdummy gannon all very bad coaches

  10. We have garbage ownership and it reflects on the field. All we have to hope for is that random year, that everything lines up otherwise, Bidwill will not do whats needed, if thats forcing himself into football decisions, bad contracts, trying to save money, or an inability to hire the right people. I always expect BIdwell to get in his own way and do the wrong thing. We are the most losingest team in football history. I believe the Bidwell name is a curse and that will never change.

  11. so Alex are you saying your ok with the cardinals scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as coaches go because that's all they ever do. Harbaugh is the best coach on the market he has had more winning season in 18 year then the cardinals have had in more then 100 years that means something

  12. That's why the Cardinals never win. They never take big chances. You see how they royally blew it with Andy Reid. We had the great Bruce Arians but the owners don't treat em right.

  13. They were going to fire him in 2018 , they bench Joe Flacco and They put Lamar in and he won 6 out of 7 games and saved his job.
He would be a bad hire, all John did was hire a different coordinator that wasn't a threat to his job and blame them every other year for them not running the ball or the defense was bad. And lose the history number of the game with a double digit lead.

  14. You just sold me on why the Cardinals should pursue John Harbaugh.
Not young /experienced (cardinals tried the young approach and it didn’t work. The team with the most success recently did not try the young approach).
Has a great relationship with coordinators and puts together a great staff.
The options seem kind of scarce right now outside of a couple options.

  15. Give me saleh, kubiak, carol, gruden, dabol, mccarthy any if those guys would be my preference and yes i undertand carol is aged pretty well lol still better than vance Joseph

  16. I listened to this entire episode to be open minded about your position and hear your case. To be completely firm and adamant that you absolutely don’t want Harbaugh is the most embarrassing take you’ve had to date. Just wow

  17. Each NFL team received $432.6 million in revenue sharing for the 2025 fiscal year. This figure comes directly from the Green Bay Packers’ publicly released financial report — the only team required to disclose its books — and is widely used as the benchmark for all 32 franchises.

NFL Salary Cap (per team): $(279.2) million.

Cardinals’ Cap Space entering 2025 offseason: Overall cap space: $76.1 million (5th most in NFL) Effective cap space: $72.6 million (4th most).

Total dead money: $16.51 million (money paid in previous years and charged in 2025). Over the Cap, Spotrac.

Season‑ending cap space: Just over $20 million D. Urban.

$432.6 – 279.2 + 16.51 + 20 = $189.91 million for coaches' salaries, operating expenses and the Bidwill family. This is only NFL money, does not include other revenue such as stadium revenue etc. etc…

Context: dead money, many teams were over $50M. Three teams (Saints, 49ers, Jets) were over $100M.

49ers paid their coaches an estimated $28-32M, had over $100M in dead cap, and were 12-5 👀.

Cards paid their coaches an estimated $12-14M, had $16.5M in dead cap, and were 3-14 👀.

Coaching wins in this league, not how many draft picks you have.

  18. The problem with Harbaugh is that he still thinks he's worth 20 mil. He has lost his edge and that is why they let him go. It happens all the time in life with anyone doing something long enough. Ask Bill Belichick
