That’s absolutely insane, and you’d usually want to stay away from doing that three years into the future.

  1. I wouldn’t be throwing too many stones, we’re probably going to be restructuring more than $75 million into void years this offseason. And then a similar amount next offseason.

  2. Irrelevant to this topic but people were mad we didn’t resign Carlton Davis but ever since he went to NE he’s been playing well as you would expect but he’s been drawing flags and having issues staying on the field. You can debate if Brad made the right decision on letting him walk.

Getting back to the Eagles Howie has a habit of “kicking the can” down the road but you can only do that until the bill comes due.

  3. They’re reigning super bowl champions, I think they are totally fine with where they are

  4. The cap will keep growing so pushing the hit into future years is fairly smart. That said, I’m sure there is a middle
ground on how much a team should do this. For the Eagles specifically, seems smart to go for it now with the core of their team in their primes.

  5. They won a fucking Superbowl. Something this franchise has never done. You think we’d be crying over void years if we had a Lombardi? I sure wouldn’t

  6. Sort of convinced that the salary cap “selling your future” storyline is completely contrived. Remember all the coverage about the rams Hail Mary’ing the future of their org, only to just continue having solid seasons and decent playoff showing ever since? We’re three years into the aftermath of them having “no future prospects after this season” and they’ve not only managed to hang onto playoff berths but are arguably a reasonable favorite to win it again.

  7. Sign me up for 10 years of literally picking #1 overall if it meant a superbowl. Like what are we even talking about?

  8. Smooth brain take. I think all of us would rather be them with a Super Bowl and playoff loss

This guy acting like we aren’t about to be this bad in a few years and potentially not have a superbowl

  9. This is why I always laugh at the completely misguided “the salary cap isn’t real..” comments.

When the talk of window closing comes up, other than age catching up with a team core, this is the driving factor of a window closing.

The Lions will be in that place to some extent in a few years.

  10. This isn’t the slam dunk you think it is. The eagles are a better run organization than the lions in every facet.

  11. I’m sure as shit not thrilled to be in the top five of this list, and as stated in other comments there’s a damn good chance we’ll going to be ramping up the borrowing from future years’ cap. We damn sure better win soon.

I personally don’t like the take of “the cap goes up so it makes sense to push expense to later years when it’s a smaller percent of the cap”. It’s true it hits for a smaller %, but it is still using current year money to pay for previous year play. And you’re at a disadvantage against other teams that haven’t done the same thing, ’cause they can use all of this year’s cap on this year’s team.

  12. Holy shit browns what are you doing with all that money… Oh right DeShaun Watson.

I thought the saints got their house right

  13. That’s cool and all but they did win the ring. We’re in no position to finger wag at them.

  14. I’m still sick they won last year. So many injuries dude it killed us. Eagles were our stand in

  15. Can someone explain void years? Are they spending money now in which they are now not going to be ablento spend in the future?

  16. The Saints (if im remembering correctly) really changed the cap game with this void year strategy lol

Not quite the same thing but deferred monry in baseball has got out of control as well. Shoehi has a 10 year / $700m contract…$70m a year right? Wrong. Hes getting $2m a year for 10 years. $680m is deferred to be paid out in $68m installments for 10 years after the contract is up.

The whole strategy is kind of bullshit if you ask me.

  17. This is insane for the Eagles, but keep in mind void years is only 1 strategy for cap manipulation.

  18. We’re not that great sitting 5th on this list with Goff having a 69m hit next year, and Kerby’s last year of his deal being like 34m or something ridiculous.

  19. Not seeing the reason why Philly overloaded so much into 2029 & beyond.

Nielsen changed their rating system to get more granularity from non-traditional viewing sources (bars, streaming, etc.). That is expected to *significantly* raise viewing rates over the next few years, in time for the NFL to renegotiate contracts with viewing platforms.

In turn, that means much more money coming into the league, and a commensurate rise in the salary cap. Eagles in particular were the ones to jump on that and mortgage their future, but in a controlled manner and under unique circumstances, in order to get a ring out of the deal.
