MSL today on Ivan Demidov

  1. St. Louis said a few seasons ago that he only coaches player without the puck, and trusts them wholeheartedly with it.

  2. It’s absolutely insane to me there’s a portion of the fanbase that think MSL is doing a bad job. I’m 29 and have been waiting for a Habs coach like this forever

  3. Smart, but maybe tell him he’s allowed to be more selfish ? He’s such an excellent dangler he can beat guys and try to score on his own once in a while

  4. Sorry, that should say “what does the coach want *me* to do here?” at the end of the quote.

  5. No points in how many games now? 4 I think. It’s a long season and he’s the youngest guy on the youngest team. There will be times like these.

  6. Meanwhile my buddy who’s a flyers fan will not stop bitching (rightfully) about how Toccet is way too hard on Michkov. Will take this point of view any day over that

  7. I know michkov seems like a bit problem, but I do wonder what he would be like if he had MSL as coach

  8. > They’re always asking “What does the coach want to do here”

That is so true and it also applies to us in our everyday jobs. 100% self doubting yourself.

  9. MSL is a cerebral coach and understands the game and the nuances that players, especially high skilled players encounter. He also understands, from living it, what approaches work. Well done!

  10. The more I listen to him, the more I think he’s an amazing coach. He has some areas to work on – noone is perfect – but I think he’s got all the really important bits down.

  11. Quotes like this remind me that we will be a perennial problem for the league. I’ve been waiting forever for a coach and organization like this.

  12. This is the kind of attitude I wish we’d see with Michkov, kids being overly coached on a game that isn’t his. I hope Demidov gets all the leniency needed for his game to develop

  13. This is such a smart thing to do. MSL is the greatest player-turned-coach the team has had since Jacques Lemaire, and it would be easy for him to think he knows better than Demidov, because he used to be an offensive superstar himself, but he knows Demidov is great because of his instinct, not the system, and he knows he has to let him grow his own way. That’s what Therrien could not do with Subban.

  14. After years of therien, Julien, therien again, ducharme and others I am extremely happy to have a coach like Marty. The players seem to love him, I agree with them.

  15. That’s not just a good coaching philosophy, but general good leadership advice in all fields. We have all had the nit picky micromanager who drives us nuts, and in the end, you focus more on how they want something done, as opposed to doing your best with your skills.

The micromanager will never be happy, and you will have produced worse work than you could have because you spent more energy emulating someone else’s style than actually working on the project.

I’m no coaching expert, but I will say MSL’s leadership style is something I wish more people would adopt.
