This was MLB Network's first Top 10 from 2011. Funny to look at this now, knowing how some of these careers played out. A few names feel obvious, a few feel weird in hindsight, but it's still a cool snapshot of what "elite" looked like back then

  1. i, as a Cardinals and Giants fan, was in the middle of gooood times! (I’m paying for it now, though, don’t worry);

    also, of the three drug cheats at the bottom of this list, Ryan braun is the only one I consider to be a dirty piece of shit. those other guys had their issues, but to my knowledge, they didn’t try to ruin some innocent dude’s career.

    ryan braun remains my least favourite ballplayer, perhaps of all time.

  2. How quickly Lincecum fell off a cliff. 24.4 WAR in his first 5 seasons, -4.5 WAR in his last 5 seasons.

  3. What was the average age of these guys at that time? This is before the big youth movement.

  4. Just how incredibly transcendent Josh Hamilton was in Texas those few years. He just exploded and was out of the game 4 years later.

  5. 1. The bottom three were suspended for breaking mlbs drug policy.

    2. No kershaw (who won cy young that year) or Verlander who (who won cy young and mvp that year)

  6. Ugh…  Ryan Braun.  I hate seeing that guy listed in anything other than as a PED user who tried to destroy the life of a man (by calling him an antisemite) that was just doing his job instead of admitting he was on PEDs.

    Fucking jerk.

  7. Robinson Cano has his 4,000 professional hit a few months ago in the Mexican League World Series.

  8. Pretty much the last time I followed baseball completely, after getting fed up with broadcast rights and blackout policies.

  9. Josh was one of my favorite players. Addiction sucks. He could have been one of best to ever play the game.
