The TLDR version is that he suggests moving to a 5 forward system and actually setting up specific plays for specific players. I think the most interesting thing for me is just seeing the power play shot comparison charts between Edmonton and Philly, and just how different they are.

  1. I do my part when attending games by yelling “SHOOOOOOOOT!” At least 7 times per power play. Am I not yelling enough?

  2. I like different ideas. Which forward(s) are at the point? I also would like to see whatever 5 are out there be given the full two minutes. When they can’t win a faceoff, the line change a minute means a unit only has roughly 1 offensive possession per PowerPlay.

  3. Tocchet won’t do it. He even puts two D out sometimes because he’s so terrified of shorthanded goals.

  4. Pretty sure we have neither a McDavid or Draisaitl and if we did, we could have Zach Rinaldo coaching the PP and still be better than we currently are.

  5. We dont have a power play center. We dont have a power play qb. I guess switching to 5 forwards cant be any worse than it is now. Id try a line on 39-11-46-74-9 when hes back. Not sure i really want 74 out there since he cant hit the net and isnt a very good passer, but we dont have 71 right now. 46 will lose or get thrown out of the faceoff, but thats what happens now anyway.

  6. It also helps that Edmonton has McDavid, Drai, an elite PP QB (Bouchard) and a big body in front of the net (Hyman)

  7. I was at the Tampa game on Monday and one thing I noticed is how intentional their PP looks. They are running plays where it looks like we just probe for openings.

  8. The flyers Power play in my opinion lacks two major things. First one being, the ability to be a little more unpredictable. Whether its the players having no confidence and always going for the simple play, or the system not allowing or preaching movement… they run a very static round the horn power play thats completely predictable and fails miserably to break down any defensive structure. Their lack of movement and vision consistently allows the other team to maintain their structure, maintain the low risk passing lanes and keep everything to the outside, or in lower danger areas. Second, they severely lack a sniper/goal scorer. Zegras is close, and hes the only reason the flyers PP isnt at 5%, but the effectiveness of the PP is desperately missing Foerester. He remains second on the team in power play goals and only has 21 games played. Its no coincidence that a mild power play in the 18-20% range plummeted to worst in the league with his exit.

Their pp1 has more talent on it than many teams, just zero ability to finish. Their entry success is better than its been previously. They could us a better qb, they could use a lot of things… im just not sure whether its a complete lack of confidence or coaching direction that causes them to be so static and uncreative. Mich, zegras, and Tk should be able to cause defensive breakdowns. Flat out. Barkey has looked to have a bit of that vision and creative ability since hes been up, but hes 20 and brand new.

Coots Cates Tippett and anyone else really just isnt that guy
