It’s time: The New York Rangers need to fire Chris Drury, Today
January 15, 2026
This isn’t written by me but I think it lays out issues this organization has very well.

What a day today would be. Harbaugh in for the Giants, Drury out for the Rangers.
I will be fucking shocked into paralysis if Dolan fires drury this YEAR, let alone today
Unfortunately not going to happen anytime soon , we are only a little more then a week removed from dolan saying he has full confidence in drury and he is building a winning culture that takes time . That combined with dolan doesnt care about the hockey team he owns and barely remembers he owns a hockey team means he isnt going to be moving on from the guy who rubs his belly , rubs his feet and brings him his coffee anytime soon
We’re stuck with this clown for a long time folks, zero chance they fire him anytime soon.
I wouldn’t necessarily want the mid season boost that (often, not guaranteed but often) comes with a major organizational shake up. Keep him around and get the best shot at the best pick. Fire him in the offseason. Just my two cents…don’t let a crisis go to waste at least reap something.
What is needed is financial pressure. We can’t do anything about ticket sales because the house is filled every game, but the crowd should at least keep up the Fire Drury chant. The rest of us need to stop watching games on TV. That ratings downturn drives ad rates down and affects the income. Only thing that Dolan might care about. I stopped watching a few games ago.
It is utterly demoralizing when you are playing every game that goes in to OT and lose it. They were playing it close up until Igor got hurt but they have no one that can consistently score outside of like 3 players. I noticed at one point that Kreider would have led the team in goal had he still been here. What did clown Drury get in return? Did he replace a potential 20-30 goal scorer? No. He got more depth forwards and bottom pair D. That has been his pattern. I don’t expect him to change.
He should have been fired 2 years ago. Dolan just extended him.
I think there’s better odds Drury would coach the team before Dolan fires him.
He’s a ring kisser. Drury isn’t going anywhere, which is why for the first time in my 37 years as a fan, I’ve just stopped watching
Sam Rosen kept me around last year. But now? I got better uses of my time
If he’s not fired after this recent embarrassing stretch, he won’t ever be.
On close inspection, many decisions made by a general manager can be interpreted in a variety of ways including good or bad, ie — Your opinion versus his. The problem with Drury becomes obvious when you step back and examine the big picture, and that is to ask the question, “What exactly is the long term vision, Chris?”. Is there even a long term plan or is he flying blind day to day?
A general manager is supposed to focus every facet of the entire organization on building towards a championship. What is Drury building? The NHL roster has no identity. There are no viable prospects in junior development, which means there is no coherent future for the NHL roster. There is no core of homegrown players on the NHL roster to build around. There is talk of changing the culture at the NHL level but the roster is loaded with overpaid under-achieving mercenaries with bad contracts, ie — You built that culture, Chris. And, Chris, the dark void that lies ahead in the near-term future for this organization is also of your creation.
Rule one when you find yourself in a deep hole is to stop digging. Drury has flown this organization into a hole in the ground. Dolan needs to end the Drury era immediately.
I’m a Rangers fan and a Manchester United fan. It’s simply baffling that these two find themselves in just the same amount of misery these days. At the same time.
Unlike the Rangers and drafting, I sure know how to pick them…
I honestly wish this was happening with Fox and Igor healthy so there could be no excuses. I am positive that Dolan is buying the “we’re injured” excuses from his ~~son~~ GM Drury
Drury was very inexperienced when he was turned loose on Hartford; the program under his leadership achieved nothing and in fact regressed terribly. I want someone in the MSG c-suite waterboarded until they tell the plain truth about why, despite this objective failure, he was still (rapidly) promoted into positions of greater authority with an NHL team.
Of course we know the answer, but it would be satisfying to finally hear some unvarnished truth.
I have to take issue with something in this article.
> Likewise, of the two seasons the Rangers made the conference finals, Drury opted for small, modest deadline additions like Andrew Copp, Frank Vatrano, Jack Roslovic and Alex Wennberg as opposed to genuine top six players. The team was losing its minutes at even strength and Drury continued to operate as if depth could make up for New York’s lack of high-end talent
This article is misremembering what actually happened at these deadlines.
Wennberg was acquired because Chytil had what we thought was a season ending concussion and we literally did not have a 3C. Find me the elite center who was moved at the 2024 deadline.
Vatrano was acquired because in 2022 Dryden Hunt spent half the year in the top 6. He cost just a 4th round pick and fit like a glove in our top 6.
Copp was a “genuine top 6 player.” Like, we paid a steep price for him, he played very well for us, and Panarin-Strome-Copp was an excellent line that year.
The author also just completely ignores that in 2023 we DID go hard after “genuine top 6 forwards” in Tarasenko and Kane and it didn’t work.
Do not mistake me for a Drury defender, he sucks and should be fired, but most of his deadline additions made a lot of sense. Roslovic is the only one where the author’s description is accurate.
Nice piece but again I wish one of the beat writers would really go there on Drury. It’s clear he’s created a bad working environment and it must’ve been demoralizing to the players to see him, of all people, extended after the debacle of last year.
The delusion people have that his job is realistically remotely in jeopardy….
This is an outstanding summary of this unmitigated disaster
My grandmother has a better chance of growing wheels and being a bicycle than this happening
That’s an excellent piece. Nick Zararis is smart, thoughtful and analytical. His weekly podcast with Andrew Chelny is worth checking out (although neither one of them can pronounce Mika’s last name correctly despite having heard it spoken correctly for a decade now).
