[Rapoport] Steelers request to talk with Evero

  1. I wonder how much interest from other teams it’s going to take before a lot of us realize Evero is actually good at his job.

  2. I would give Evero one more shot next year after we draft some defensive pieces for him to use. I’d hate to see him go when we just made the playoffs and we had a shutout performance against the Falcons this year.

  3. I’m not really rooting for him to leave, but (I think this is the rule) I will be happy if we get a 3rd round pick out of his promotion

  4. Y’know past comments and feelings of the last game aside. I really don’t hate EJ. Felt like the defense had a complete 180 and kept us in a lot of games when the offense wasn’t playing well.

I just hope with every fiber of me he learns that prevent defense isn’t it.

    Rootin for the guy!

  5. As other have stated the love to hate ratio for Evero is 50:50 in this sub.
That said my opinion is this, he is a great defensive mind that is highly regarded and has great peaks with equally harsh valleys.

He is a DC from a previous failed regime and was kept for good reason and has done the best with what our team had.

I don’t think it’s often a coach can have a historically bad defense one year and still get the praise around the league without good reason.

I think as a HC in the right situation he could prove great and imo worth kicking the tires like other defensive coaches in the past.

For the Steelers I could see it as a good fit if they also have an OC that compliments him.

  6. I am at a loss on how people believe he is anything more than a guy who lucked into where he is. One year in Denver as a defensive coordinator with a ton of talent to the point Denver’s defense is still top 5-10 yet has shown nothing here besides soft coverage and a unwillingness to play young players or a stubbornness to play players out of position (Rozeboom being inside LB while playing Wallace at outside LB to start the season) until he is forced to change. He is not good and will actively hold the team back going forward

  7. Yes he’s good BUT he does do some questionable stuff. Scourton lining up at ILB way too much last game, Turk Wharton playing NT on early downs when he’s about 280. I truly don’t know if the pass rush is lack of TALENT or bad scheme. Maybe a mix of both. He’s definitely improved our defense with limited talent though.

    He’s definitely interesting.

  8. I know this is said a lot about HC candidates, but EJ seems more like an Xs and Os guy than a HC culture guy.

  9. Juries out on Evero. He was regarded as a top notch DC in Denver and was a hot HC candidate who did a transfer to the Carolina job for the rebuild. Only to complete the rebuild Carolina traded away, or let walk pretty much all core defensive pieces and focused the entirety of FA, and draft resources on getting BY support and weapons. This left Evero with a terribly under talented roster – which struggled.

Because of that I’m not sure it’s fair to put defensive struggles entirely on Evero. He’s a solid DC when he has pieces in place. He just hasn’t had pieces.
