Golden State Warriors majority owner Joe Lacob is interested in buying Major League Baseball’s Padres, which could endanger the franchise’s long-term viability in San Diego.

Last month, Lacob told the San Francisco Chronicle that he’s “always interested in looking into new opportunities and buying the Padres might be something he’d explore.” The quote was confirmed for Forbes recently by a spokesperson for the highly-valued NBA franchise.

The Padres, owned by the remaining brothers of the Seidler family, announced in November they had hired the investment bank of BDT & MSD Partners to explore sale of the franchise, which has been in the hands of the Seidler/O’Malley family since it was purchased from John Moores in 2012 for $800 million.

  2. This is ridiculous. The Padres have a huge fanbase and are in a big city. Not only that but they have one of the best stadiums in all of sports. MLB is being ran into the ground

  3. This is easily the dumbest video you have put out. Nobody is leaving a top 3 MLB ball park, in a top 3 city in the country, where they sell out EVERY game, for Oakland. The Royals would be on the next plane to San Diego to call it home

  4. This would be quite literally one of the dumbest moves MLB could allow. Our city consistently has the highest attendance of almost any team in the league. There is simply no legitimate reason to move the Padres anywhere.

  5. Eek, that would mean from the 1969 expansion of MLB, only Kansas City would be in its original town.
Not a good sign from MLB's largest expansion.

  6. The Gaints now claim territorial rights to that region. They, and MLB, would likely block a team moving into that area.

Not to mention, there is no viable stadium in the Oakland area (the Coliseum is NOT a viable stadium and PETCO is 100x better than the Coliseum).

  7. I was a native of San Diego for the first 37 years of my life. I now live in Australia since 2014. When I heard the news about the ( San Diego) Chargers moving to L.A. I was devastated. If the Padres move out I would be devastated even more. I still do fellow the Chargers and the Padres because of my roots being from San Diego.

I’m all for Joe Lacob purchasing the Padres knowing what he has done with the Golden State Warriors but if he does purchase the Padres their needs to be a guaranteed to stay in San Diego. San Diego couldn’t and shouldn’t go through losing another major league team.

  8. Diehard San Diego Padres fan here. Emphasis on San Diego. They’re dead to me if they move just as the chargers are dead to me now. This report is laughable. The idea that Oakland is a better option than what is established in San Diego is a bad joke.

  9. I hear fans saying this will never happen and they are quite smug about it. I understand the trauma because SD is a cursed sports city. For those that think it won’t or can’t happen… never say never

  10. This would be the equivalent of Baltimore getting the Browns after the Colts left town. It would also put San Diego in the poll position for expansion if it happened

  11. Appreciate the effort, but the Padres absolutely are not moving. everyone has a voice, and if this is what you want to do with yours, that's fair. They are not moving. Especially for a dump like Oakland that has had great teams, and not been supported

  12. Keep the Padres in San Diego, it's not our fault that Oakland lost their team. Don't ruin our fanbase to save yours. We've lost enough teams in our history. I'd never support anything from NorCal if y'all screw us over.

  13. Lifelong Dodgers fan here. Moving the Padres from the one of the best stadiums in mlb from a HARD DEDICATED fanbase whose ONLY major professional sports team is a yearly contender? That sounds ENORMOUSLY foolish.
