[Scotto/Hoopshype] Watson has drawn significant interest on the trade market, but the Nuggets have rebuffed trade calls and want to re-sign him in RFA

  1. Goddamn this season keeps getting better and better. I love Cam, but if he’s gotta go to keep Peyton then I’m not upset in the least.

  2. Some teams need to learn to draft and develop their guys and not want the easy way out getting everything handed to them (ahem LA).

  3. >Similar to Watson, Nuggets two-way forward Spencer Jones has made the most of his opportunities while becoming a key rotation player and a fill-in starter this season. The 24-year-old 3-and-D forward has shot well from the field (.510) and beyond the arc (.389). As a result, Jones will eventually have his contract converted to a standard NBA deal, league sources told HoopsHype.

    >With Denver projected only $402,000 above the luxury tax line, expect the Nuggets to make a small trade to duck below the tax and give themselves breathing room for the conversion of Jones.

    >Furthermore, the Nuggets are expected to monitor the trade and buyout market in case a notable veteran backup point guard upgrade becomes available, league sources told HoopsHype.

    >Keep in mind, the Nuggets have two traded player exceptions that expire in July: $6.88 million from the Michael Porter Jr. trade and $5.43 million from the Dario Saric trade.

  4. He has played his way into “you are going to have to truly blow up away with what you offer” in order to be traded. Dude looks like a future multi time all star the last month. Better than both Thompson brothers.

  5. Keep all your filthy hands off our PWat. He’s a gift and we’re taking him with us.

  6. I mean ya pretty much have to keep and resign him with how he’s played. The real question is are we trading Braun/Cam or cutting Valancunas and trading both Zeke and Strawther in order to afford him

  7. Unfortunately I fear they PWat is going to get a huge offer in RFA that the Nuggets won’t be able to afford to match

  8. My guess is they just dump Strawther to someone and maybe Zeke if they can find a reasonable move where they take back less salary. Besides that I’d be shocked to see anything major happen. Get under that first apron to set up for future flexibility and let this team get healthy and build chemistry down the stretch.

  9. We are currently $39 million over the Second Apron for next year. Not sure how we sign Watson without losing some serious salary afterwards. Would need to get rid of Cam, Valanciunas, Nnaji, and Braun to somehow get under the 2nd Apron next year. We could go over it for a year, although ownership has not been willing to do that. At least we have the rest of the season to see if Watson continues to perform like he has of late.

  10. We absolutely need to rebuff trade offers, unless it’s something just too good to pass by. He has a chance to develop into an all star caliber player. Factor in he’s only 23, and Jokic will be 31 in Feb, Gordon is 30, Murray will be 29 in Feb. We could really use a young star, entering his prime, 3 years from now. Think how when Duncan, Parker, and Manu were ageing, and Leonard was hitting peak. Not saying Watson will be that good, but he has a high ceiling. I thought his floor was Corey Brewer coming out, and ceiling was something along the lines of Latrell Sprewell. Well he is doing what Brewer did in his best season now. And over the last 9 games, he has a averages that match Sprewell. I compare him to those two because of tough defense and body types. Albeit he’s taller that Sprewell, they’re all 2 guards that can play 3.

  11. Match Watson then figure it out the numbers later.

We have zero cap space and very limited trade assets and picks for the rest of the jokic era

We cannot let him go. We can’t get anyone even 10% as good anywhere else.

  12. I know it’s the second apron, but Watson is good enough at this point to go into the second apron for. Please keep him around Nuggets

  13. For years YEARS now we’ve been listening to dumbshit pundits slag Denver for “letting Bruce go” or “fumbling KCP” and this was the endless drone explaining why the team didn’t repeat as champs. This was always ALWAYS complete bullshit.

I’ve been saying for a while now that the team will find a way to keep PWat. Losing him would truly be a disaster. It would be the mistake that everyone thought losing Jeff Green was. But now look: it ain’t happening. Suck it Lakers. Suck it everyone, he’s staying.

  14. Hunter Tyson and a second round pick getting shipped to the Nets/Jazz/Hornets for the ole reliable cash considerations. Doubt it’s Strawther that gets traded cuz he’s got one extra year on his contract and Tyson is an expiring.

  15. Watson has become the rare incredibly raw player that actually hits the potential that comes with the physical profile. He has become so productive so quickly, and on such a cheap contract, that there are probably no viable moves that make sense with him, other than a trade where he was the standout young piece in a superstar deal involving multiple contracts.

I am a bit concerned about us retaining him, but we need him and we need the contract slot, so he has to come back. Most reasonable moves may just be about finding a way to reset the repeater tax this year, fully aware that PWat brings us well into the luxury next season. Whether or not they’ll boldly go into the luxury for Watson is hard to say.

  16. There’s no way B/W would be rebuffing offers if they hadn’t confirmed with Kroenkes viable paths forward.

  17. PWat is the man. Little [not so little] bro is 23! GTFO. Seems like every game he adds something new. SIGN PWAT OR ELSE

  18. Yeah with giving Braun money we know we cant match in RFA but ofc we keep him when we need him for another ring !!

  19. Can the Nuggets afford to keep him? I thought I had heard it would put them over the threshold if they did. I’d love to see him stay, because he’s been a great player, but if they can’t afford to keep him then they should try and trade him for picks which I believe the Nuggets don’t really have
