Luka gets a lot of criticism for needing the type of team that superstars like SGA, Jokic, Ant, Wemby, Brunson, etc already have. “Oh they need a very specific combo of athletes, shooting, and defense to compete around Luka. You can’t win with him when you have Gabe Vincent and friends playing 20 minutes a night for some reason. This is clearly a Luka problem”, like that’s not the bare minimum to compete for a chip in the modern day, but discussing team depth and construction is too nuanced a take for most fans.

They don’t seem to realize the league has changed in the past 4 years and Luka also changed his shot diet a ton since. Reggie and DoDo played their best 3&D that season and Luka, Brunson Burner, and Spence worked better than an older, worn down Luka, 41yr old LeBron, and Reaves. They shot well and played good defense to finish the season and beat the Jazz and Suns in 2 hard fought series BUT the hot shooting and lack of actual rim protection and rebounding eventually caught up to them the moment they played the Warriors who had Looney who was crashing the glass better than Ayton or Gobert while having more than 3 offensive threats in Curry, Klay, and Poole.
They can’t point to that one team as an excuse to surround Luka with scraps when it was exposed against a team that most contenders nowadays are more or less equally equipped as. Not to mention the years outside of 2022 & 2024 were all first round exits in the Luka era when he didn’t have a competently constructed or just red hot roster around him.
So yeah, send Luka help. Get the Murals up. Actually nevermind, just let our boy jump ship and leave LA so he can come home. He still has his house in Dallas doesn’t he?

Luka is just the talk of the town this season because he’s on the Lakers. If Luka was in Charlotte, Indiana, Utah or some other bottom tier team, putting up these kinds of numbers, nobody would care, he would even get pity from people. It’s the Lakers effect.

What that Lakers dude forgot to mention was that Bullock and DFS were elite that year and Dinwiddie also went wild off the bench. I like Luka, but he DOES need a squad that compliments him. The 2022 team would get cooked today, the 24 team was near perfect but a lot of our guys just kinda ran out of gas vs the Cs whom were one of the best constructed teams of this decade.

Okay but like, Reggie Bullock busted his ass on defense, Dwight Powell was younger, Dodo was and still is a hella good defender, Frank Ntlikina was an elite defender… wasn’t enough to get to the finals but that was a nice start.

The 24 mavs team was absolutely built with Luka being the star in mind, that doesn’t mean he can only win with a team perfectly built for him, the lakers are just a terribly built team with LeBron taking up way too much cap space, idk why laker fans thought Luka would automatically make them championship contenders with no one around to help but you do still need a competent team around stars to win
