Will the Mets REALLY Make a Push to Sign Cody Bellinger? | How Many HUGE Deals Can They Afford?

New York Yankees’ stalled negotiations with Cody Bellinger ignite a dramatic race—can the New York Mets capitalize and land MLB’s top remaining free agent?

With contract figures revealed and Scott Boras pushing for blockbuster terms, the dynamic between rival teams intensifies.

Are the Mets ready to shatter the luxury tax ceiling and rival the Dodgers’ spending, or will they opt for alternative roster upgrades like Harrison Bader, Lars Nootbaar, or making trade moves for pitchers such as Freddy Peralta or Framber Valdez?

Ryan Finkelstein weighs the financial impact of a high-AAV, short-term contract for Bellinger, addresses Mets payroll realities, and examines how Steve Cohen’s aggressive spending could transform the lineup.

Key discussion points include the pros and cons of the Bo Bichette’s contract offer, possible ripple effects on future trades, qualifying offer strategies, and the Mets’ pursuit of a championship-caliber roster.

Can Cohen’s bold moves launch the Mets into World Series contention?

  1. 17:23 great point, on the restaurant comparison, but i hope they do it. Also, people sleeping on the effect ti the young kids being around this new and better hitters

  2. Mets preach run prevention, but think they are smarter in putting 3 players out of position. I don't buy it. Get Bellinger at 1st Base, Bader in CF and use Taylor in RF to spell Soto some to hit him at DH. Polonco becomes a switch hitting DH. Now, assuming Bichette becomes a better 3rd baseman than Baty last year, we are way better defensively. That opens up Vientos and Baty as trade pieces for more controllable mid rotation arms and bullpen help. Mauricio stays in minors, and acuna is my infield late inning defensive replacement for Bichette. Then I wait and see who I want to let go of for Skubal later in the year. Clifford and Reimer are waiting in the wings and may be more important to keep.

  3. Look it’s gonna take at least 5 years with opt outs and a massive signing bonus at 40 million AAV for Bellinger to become a met! We were willing to go 4 years with Tucker and a signing bonus that really made it 5 years plus 15 million on top of that! If we want Bellinger we have to commit that same type of energy to him and we will sign him but it will be for 5 years like we try to do with Tucker not like what we did with Bichette

  4. bellinger isnt the top free agent left on the board!!! not even close.. framber valdez is the best free agent on the market and the best pitcher on the market this entire offseason… we need an ace and a number 2… we dont have a WS rotation and our bullpen is worse. the pitching knocked us out of the playoffs with their august and september

  5. 15:58 it makes total sense lol. I’m not going to mad if they don’t make the big splash move. I like those upside signings like canning/ Holmes/ 2024 Manaea and Sevy. As long as they bring in guys that want to be here and be great, then I’m all about it

  6. Not high on Bellinger at all. Especially for that money and years. He has had to many off seasons as well. Trade Vientos for Noobar , Trade Acuna / prospect for Roberts. ( Let Benge start year at AAA get his feet wet for abit ) Let Baty play 1B splitting time with Polanco at DH. Trade for Peralta for Williams , Sproat, Peterson, and lower prospect..

  7. If Mets make post season 2026 Cohen will share in that revenue boost …..value of team will jump a couple hundred million dollars. Don't worry about Cohens spending LA is going to crush the Mets why go 70% ?? Full steam ahead

  8. Mets should not be in on Bellinger. They don't have the team this year to get to WS. Next year will be lock out and be blocking are prospects that should be ready 2 years from now

  9. Throwing a huge one-year deal at a fourth outfielder sounds crazy. Bader had a career year and the odds of him repeating that are extremely unlikely. I'd love to have him in the mix, but I wouldn't even guarantee him a starting role.

  10. Cody is mid af outside Yankee stadium. If Mets give him anywhere near 30 million a year, they’re stupid af.

    He’s a 6 yr 200 mil player for Yankees. He’s a 6 year 120 million player for the Mets.

  11. I think the Mets have to retain Baty because if Bichette has a good/great year, he’s opting out next season. Put Bret in LF, get Austin Hayes to platoon with him and get a big-time starter. Btw, trade one of our present SP’s.
