Am I the only one annoyed that Jones got so much more support than Edmonds?

  1. If you want to argue with me that Jones is more deserving because *pick your favorite argument* than that’s fine, but I’ll just never understand Jimmy getting less than 5% while Jones, a very comparable player (who I would argue never even sniffed the impact on the batting order that prime Edmonds had) gets in.

  2. Jim Edmonds 100% belongs in the Hall of Fame. He’s a poor broadcaster and seems pretty unlikable, but his prowess (and production) as a player should have made him a shoo-in for the Hall.

  3. Jones felt like a HOF lock until his numbers fell off a cliff. I think a lot of writers are hanging on to that.

  4. Edmonds JUST missed the modern analytics wave. People were still largely voting old school when he was on the ballot. He will get in eventually through the veteran’s committee.

  5. Jones was the overall better player, but Jimmy Ballgame didn’t get nearly enough respect

  6. Ballgame absolutely deserves to be in the hall. There has to be something behind the scenes keeping him out, be it knowing he doped on the DL or maybe just being a huge asshole to people. IDK, but clearly something other than baseball kept him on the outside.

  7. I have argued this with so many people. By just about every metric CF vs CF that are in Jim Edmonds is a Hall of Famer.

  8. It’s just timing and vibes really.

The BBWAA just got a glut of new voters this year, and it is clear from Jones and King Felix that these are almost all big hall guys that look at the context of the career more than counting stats. If Edmonds held on another couple years, i think hed be getting enough votes now to get the Tim Raines treatment, where he hangs around for awhile, but finally gets in.

Then there is the vibes. Edmonds was looked at as a premier fielder, but Jones was looked at as THE fielder of his generation. It doesnt really matter that he became a complete liability in the field by the time he turned 30. I think most people dont realize how young Jones was in the twilight of his career. Its just kinda seen as the natural end of any great career, but most people dont realize it happened 5-7 years before most HOF careers tail off.

  9. It basically boils down to the counting stats (fair or not). Jones had 400 HRs and 10 GGs while Jimmy “only” had 393 and 8

  10. I was until you showed me that graphic. But I still think Jimmy Ballgame should be in the HOF.

  11. I looked it up one time and there are I think less than 5 HOFers with as many or more gold gloves than Jimmy who also averaged a career OPS higher than .900. Mays was one of them, I think Jr. as well. Barry Bonds notably not in the hall of fame also did it. Depending on how you feel about whether he deserved the gold gloves or not he was still an incredible defender and one of the best 2 way ballplayers ever.

  12. Jimmy Ballgame being a one and done in the HOF voting is the dumbest fucking thing ever.

  13. It’s even crazier when you give the context that Jimmy ballgame fell off the ballot after one year because he couldn’t even get 5% of the vote. It was a loaded class, but it’s still ridiculous

  14. It didn’t help, he was on the ballot with Griffey. Voters probably compared the two both being CF

  15. This is more of an indictment of the selection process with ten names maximum getting a vote. There were some very incredible players entering hall of fame eligibility at that time.

  16. Edmonds had bad timing. Crowded ballot, Griffey debuting at the same time, but I think his time will come soon
