The Minnesotan was in Winnipeg for the announcement and spoke today after the formal portion of the media availability.

Three time Stanley Cup champ Mike Keane spoke but unsurprisingly his media avail was quite short (1:47) so here's a link to that. You can watch that here.

  1. I am all for the team bringing Wheels back into the fold, he’s easily one of the most important players of the team’s first decade back in Winnipeg. But this seems too soon.

His time as a player here ended on a really sour note. The organization basically determined he was a cancer that needed to be cut out after chemo and radiation didn’t work, and fans and media reacted to news of his buyout like Iraqis toppling statues of Saddam. That was July **2023**.

Bringing him out with the ‘C’ on his jersey as basically the face of the alumni game, barely 30 months after running him out of town seems…odd.

I get that the alumni game kind of forces the acceleration of his redemption tour, but I feel like it really hasn’t been long enough for fans — and who knows, maybe the coaching staff and some players, too — to forgive and forget.

Based on the clips on social media, it doesn’t seem like he got all that enthusiastic a reception in the arena tonight. Pretty cruel timing for that to happen right after we saw Chicago’s lovefest for Toews.

  2. As a newer Winnipeg fan who never got to see any of these guys play for the Jets. I’m so fucking excited to watch this game and to see all of them play. Especially Big Buff!
