Yeah Cooper is having a ROY season but so is Kon and if you start looking at team success and margin of victory then we beat the mavs, pretty simple.
Team record is going to be what decides who wins this award and I kind of like it coming down to that factor because these two are really that close if we’re being unbiased.
KING KON
I want him to win but it’s a really tough race for him to win. Feels like the voters are looking for 1. narrative 2. stats 3. how did you affect winning
For 1, Cooper was the #1 pick and everyone said day 1 that you’d need to pretty substantially outpace him in stats and winning in order win it. Kon has no narrative, unfortunately.
For 2, Cooper will be able to put up massive counting stats as the Mavs toy with him all around the roster. It doesn’t matter if his efficiency is poor – voters have historically understood rookies are just prone to shooting worse. Counting stats are also sexy. Now, it’s interesting because Kon isn’t just shooting well *for a rookie*. He’s shooting 6% better than league TS% (Cooper is -3% in the same measurement). If he’s keeping about the same pace as now with Cooper AND keeps up those counting stats, I could maybe see it. Cooper also gets good stocks but I see him out of position at times, on my limited viewing of the Mavs. Kon will likely never get those stocks but I feel like he’s rarely making the wrong defensive play. Unfortunately, it won’t matter. Stocks are sexy.
For 3, this is where it gets tricky. I feel like voters typically look at the basic “how many wins did you add”. Cooper’s isn’t so easy… the Mavs had Luka and AD at points.. they were *trying* to make the playoffs and almost did. So, of course their wins are down but Cooper can’t be blamed (nor should he). Kon, on the other hand, won’t get enough credit publicly for how much he’s turned our team around. It’ll be “Lamelo and Miller were healthy, of course they won more”.
I imagine Cooper will win this one but I’m excited to see Kon try to rip it away, maybe even successfully!

As he should be, he is the clear winner at this point but that doesn’t mean he will get it.
and somehow i still believe the NBA will give it to Flagg by the end of the season
