The offense hasn't been as good since Ott left, of course there have been a lot of injuries but that's no excuse for some of the lows the Cavs have had when their offense was historically good last year. The coaching staff has taken a collaborative approach this season.
If they hire a offensive coordinator this off season who should it be? I think they should find someone that runs the corner offense. Check out this video if you've never seen it before. The Nuggets run it a lot:

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a significant house cleaning because this team is so disconnected and poorly motivated. It seems insane to think the most recent coach of the year is in the hot seat, but his coaching this year is shockingly ineffective and the roster is pretty much stuck where it is thanks to apron rules, draft debt, and long term commitments to the core players.
I’ll check this out because I like this kind of stuff. But I am in the camp that feels Ott’s departure is quite overblown.
The most obvious difference is the health of Darius Garland. And then secondary: The absences of Sam Merrill and Max Strus. And Tertiary, our other legacy 3-pt shooters are just not shooting well. Wade, Hunter, Mobley, Nance, Ball…no one has shot anywhere near their usual standard. Only after those 3 issues am I getting around to coaching and scheme. We need DG for drive and kick, we need our shooters for floor spacing and we need guys to make open shots they usually make and boom…I think you’re close to the offense of last year.
The Cavs’ offense is pretty clearly a personnel problem:
– Strus, Merrill, and Garland have missed so much time and they should be three of our four best shooters
– Jerome (and LeVert, who was tradeable because Jerome played well last year) are gone, meaning Mitchell and Garland (when he plays) are the only guys who are breaking down their defender and beating them
– Hunter is just playing poorly, all-around.
I would say yes. IMO if we separate from one of DG or Don then I want out if Kenny’s offense either by hiring someone to fill an Ott kinda role or moving on completely.
I like Kenny, but our offense is too reliant on high level guard play. Our inability to run a competent offense without Garland was the death of this team in the playoffs last year and it’s still one of our biggest issues now. Something has to change
Hunter, Ev, and Wade settle for too many 3s. Just because you get the ball swung to you doesn’t mean you need to shoot it with 12 on the shot clock. Ev needs at least 2 attempts at a post up per quarter, isn’t asking for much. Merrill creates a lot more space for the bigs to work as well. Hard fought, ugly wn that could have easily been a loss. Evan needs to demand the ball more especially with 3 key players injured.
We could also view this as Ott is running Kenny’s offense successfully in Phoenix. The Cavs haven’t had a true pg to consistently give them minutes alongside Mitchell this year. DG and Jerome filled that role last year.
