David Montgomery.
It's not for Goff. It's not for the passing game.

It's for creativity in the run game – we're going back to the 2023 identity which includes David Montgomery not just sitting on the sideline.

  1. Lets be honest, nobody here knows shit about whether it’s a good hire or not. Nobody knows the extent of this guy’s knowledge or ability. And nobody knows the extent of his responsibilities.

Worry about the lack of investing into a Superbowl team three years running. No major off-season acquisition. No major trades. No major deadline moves. They are trying to only draft their team like the Packers tried for the last two decades.

You gotta go all in before it’s too late. And likely already is too late.

  2. big agree. I’m thinking – Monty, Gibbs, LaPorta, St Brown, and TeSlaa all gonna have huge years this year. Im a little worried about Jamo

  3. The run game is definitely part of it. However, this is for Jared Goff as well. Run = Play action. Petzing has a good track record with tight ends over his career and is the inventor of 13 personnel at least how we know it today in the league. Having three tight ends on the field helps with the run game and I believe Arizona threw out of 13 personnel something like 40% of the time. it creates mismatch with linebackers as long as you have an athletic tight end or two. Would not be surprised to see the lions draft a tight end this year. Scheme wise this is a good move for the Lions and the brand of football they want to play.

I get what you’re saying but improving the creativity in the run game IS for Goff and the passing game. Goff is the best QB in the league at making plays off play-action. Making the defense respect and fear the run game only makes him that much more dangerous off of play-action.

Also, go watch the stuff Petzing did with Trey McBride off of play action and tell me you can’t see LaPorta absolutely slaughtering defenses on similar looks. I personally am very excited to see what he’s going to bring to this team given the talent we have and the fit with his scheme

  5. I think the talent drop off from D-Mo to 3rd and 4th string is much bigger than we think. I also think getting rid of D-Mo would be a giant mistake. But, as always, Go Lions.

  6. When a Dan Campbell team is moving AWAY from a guy like D-Mo… somebody dun effed up son!

  7. PLEASE let this be, I would LOVE to see them both lined up more often can go power run, finesse run, PA, quick out, deep ball…. ah everything!!!! LFG!!!

  8. Fuck that’s good as long as we have some guys to keep the passing game in check.

I don’t wanna see Jamo with 0 stats ever again.

  9. If this was their goal, 1) they would’ve incorporated him more last season in the later half and 2) there are a ton of coordinators out there that you could’ve just said “include DMo” and it’d solve that.

Obviously none of us know what the conversation was like behind closed doors but I can almost guarantee you that they did not make this OC decision with DMo’s existence being a driving force

  10. Lets go. I’m with you, I was sort like huh. But it is nice to see from the outside that it makes a bit of sense. If anything we need to get LaPorta a better partner.

  11. Yikes.

    It’s definitely for Goff man.

Goff excels at a rhythm and timing based play action offense. That’s exactly what this is.

Amon Ra is one of the best at finding soft coverage through option routes – that’s exactly what this does.

Penei is on if the most athletic OT’s in the league. This frees him up to push pull concepts -That’s what this does.

Sam LaPorta has some of the best hands and hip swivel for a TE making him a great blocker and receiver causing chaos among Linebackers – that’s what this does.

Saying you finally understand – sorry man – looks like you never understood.

  12. What Petzing did with a pocket passer like Brissett was actually really good. Couldn’t scheme up shit for Kyler Murray, but evidence suggests that Murray is actually ass. So, I think while the running creativity is key here, it’s potentially really good for Goff as well.

  13. I really hope you’re right, because there were atleast a few moments every single game this season where I thought “They should’ve ran that play with Montgomery”. I want to see my boy used to the best of his abilities, plus the Sonic and Knuckles dynamic was sorely missed this season.

  14. That’s nice and all but ultimately won’t matter if we don’t have a proper oline. We’re on the cusp of being the Bengals of the NFC

  15. I actually have the same thought about his hire. He’s known for having a good running game with a good two-headed running back monster so his hiring kind of signals a move back to that and seems like it’s maybe offering an olive branch to Monty.

My other thought: I’m not sure what Mike McDaniel or any of the other guys stance on audibles is, but Jared Goff audibles a heck of a lot and if they didn’t like quarterbacks audible in the line that probably would have been a no-go with Goff as well. I don’t think we’ll ever know what the “wasn’t the right fit” comment about McDaniel with truly about, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it had something to do with these two things and maybe a few things more.

  16. When we run the ball, we open up the passing game. When we pass the ball, we open up the run game. When we do RPO and play action, we win?

  17. I was initially upset, but now that I’ve actually done more than 3 seconds of research, I’m excited to see what happens next because they might be cooking with this Petzing hire.

  18. Hoping we keep Montgomery.  He and Gibbs together were outstanding and certainly can be again if the o line is fixed.
