As a Vikes fan, I want him gone.

Other fans are thinking he’s the real deal.

What’s do the panthers fan base think about this guy after having him “develop” Bryce young for a season.

  1. I’m sure people will give you a bunch of negative opinions about him but the reality is that we can’t possibly have any idea how good or bad of a coach he was with how much of a dumpster fire literally everything else was with our staff and roster. I don’t really seen any reason that he should NOT be a good QB coach, but we certainly don’t have any evidence that would prove that he is based on his time here.

  2. Was very unclear what he actually did. Thought it was telling our interim instantly canned him.

  3. The second we fired Reich we made sure McCown was right behind him out the door. Take from that what you will.

  4. I say all of the following as someone who has an ambivalent opinion of McCown:

Bro, what did you expect? McCarthy was a handoff merchant in college. His main job was to not turn the ball over on the 10-20 times he was asked to throw in a game. He never had to do much because the team’s defense was what won games. The offense just had to get to like 15-20 points in a game, and the team would win if that mark was hit. JJ was never the *”It”* factor in a game during their run, and it was dumb AF of your front office and coaching staff to ever expect anything more than that from him.

Don’t blame McCown for your QB troubles this year. Blame your FO/head coach for watching Darnold compete for an MVP, only to turn around and say, “Nah, this completely unproven prospect who hasn’t even played a single snap outside of one pre-season game is the answer” over a proven entity.

Don’t look to us for answers your team is apparently too blind to see for themselves.

  5. Here’s all I remember about him:
    – He had a YouTube channel where he did QB breakdowns before we hired him and he generally sounded knowledgeable (which is pretty much a given for anyone with nfl experience)
    – I think he actually did pre-draft breakdowns on both BY and CJ. I dont remember coming away thinking he preferred either over the other but I think he said Bryce is better at standing in the pocket and dealing with pressure (i.e. sliding around / being slippery). This is generally true i would say.
    – During Bryce’s rookie year he was in his ear 24/7 on the sideline. Literally anytime the camera panned to Bryce, McCown would be right there talking to him. I would have been annoyed / strung out if I was Bryce having to deal with that but maybe Bryce asked for that.

  6. I liked him a lot and was generally optimistic about the entire coaching staff in 2023. Obviously it turned out to be quite bad but it’s hard to judge McCown on those results. He did tell CJ we were drafting him at his pro day which was pretty unprofessional. If I had to make a guess I would say he’s not the guy I want in the building and around my quarterback.

  7. He was alright, IDK how much blame you can put on him for Nine’s struggles considering that even in CFB his main duty was handing the ball off. McCarthy was always a nonsensical draft pick for the Vikings imo

  8. I’m with the group that says we have no clue whether he is good or bad because the whole staff had issues that year. If you want to see some examples Joe Person has an article in the athletic that talks about how different members of the staff were talking to the owner about what they thought was going wrong and blaming each other. It also touches on the other points I’m going to bring up, so check it out (if you dont have an athletic subscription try archive.org or reader mode).

A big deal was made about Frank and Josh not working on Bryce’s footwork. I’m of the opinion that it wasn’t that bad in college. It wasn’t perfect or anything, but he was much more consistent with having a wide base and being set. Because of our abysmal line that year, he started developing bad habits and wasn’t in a throwing position often because he was worried he would have to scramble. This is something that is gradually improving but still crops up when the line performs poorly early in games. Hard to blame Josh for this one IMO.

Another issue was the discussion of too many voices in Bryce’s ear. Josh, Frank, Thomas Brown, Andy Dalton, and Jim Caldwell were all sitting in QB meetings giving advice 1 on 1. And given the comments from players and staff a lot of this was conflicting. When they cleared house I am sure the footwork and Bryce’s poor performance his rookie year were reasons they felt Josh wasn’t doing a great job, but they also wanted to clear out the voices and give a consistent message to the QB.

Overall a QB coach has a limited influence in season. If he misses a read early in the game but has the same play against the same coverage later in the game and hits it, that is probably the QB coach helping him by showing him on the tablet. A lot of mechanical stuff is done in the off-season with a private coach and you can only do so much when the offensive line is causing a lack of trust. I didn’t watch enough to get a handle on JJ’s issues, but what I did watch makes me think that was at least a factor.
