I think it’s almost certain Luis Arraez isn’t coming back. The Padres could use a right handed bat with some pop.
He can also platoon 1B with Sheets & Cronenworth
Not sure if Ty would take another 1-year incentive driven deal but I’d like to have him back. But I’d take anything but another last minute Yuli Guriel…

I wouldn’t hate it but also wouldn’t expect a whole lot, the league seems to have his bat figured out. But it would be low cost, possibly even just a minor league depth signing with clauses that allow him to opt out if he’s not on the big league roster by June 1 type of deal. Problem is I dont know how much of a UT he is at this point. He’s been pretty 1B heavy for the last few years.
Paul Goldschmidt would be a better option than France
maybe 4 years ago
I love Ty France. Aztec for Life! Bummed we traded him away in the Nola deal because he was blocked by Hosmer, always thought he had potential.
France is mostly a 1B at this point, but a Gold Glove winning one to his credit. Probably will get a 1 yr/3-5M deal as a great defensive 1B with a league-average bat. Wouldn’t mind adding him at 1B to platoon with Sheets.
If we’re looking for a bench utility IF though, we should sign someone who can play a good SS, since we don’t have a true backup SS (Crone can play SS in a pinch if X goes on the IL again). Song is already a left-handed INF that can play 1B/2B/3B and maybe some OF. The main options for a backup right-handed SS are OMG and Dylan Moore. I’d prefer Moore since he offers a little more pop, speed, and defensive versatility as he can play every position besides P and C.
Probably not this guy
I would take him on a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, but that is about it.
I don’t really see it. He’s not exactly “Utility”, he’s a 1B/DH who can technically play 2B in an emergency. Seems like Moon is our utility guy, he’s got much better positional flexibility.
If we have prospects or big money to spend on a slugging 1B, we should be targeting Yandy Diaz, Eugenio Suarez, or Rhys Hoskins (in that order).
If we need a cheap-ish platoon bat who plays the corners, I would much prefer Miguel Andujar over France. He’d be a nice RHB corner IF/OF type to pair with Sheets.
If we’re fully broke and need to pivot to a reclamation project, I would prefer we Nathaniel Lowe over France. Worse platoon splits, but better overall.
I think he’s the last current MLB player to have played under Tony Gwynn at SDSU. I might be wrong, but that alone means he should be in a Padres uniform.
Weird thing to think of considering they signed Miranda.. who was from the same place he was just at. Who is younger with much more upside
Only a 90 wRC+ vs. LHP last year. Andujar would be a better platoonmate for Sheets.
