New York Mets emerge as NL East rotation favorites after landing Freddy Peralta.
Can this star-powered pitching staff outshine the Braves and Phillies in 2026?
Ryan Finkelstein breaks down how Freddy Peralta’s arrival transforms the Mets’ rotation, lowering the pressure on arms like Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea and offering crucial depth with Noah McLean, David Peterson, and Clay Holmes.
The discussion covers injury risks for division rivals, the Mets’ impressive top-nine starting pitcher depth—featuring prospects Jonah Tong and Christian Scott—and why competitors like the Phillies and Braves face major question marks.
Key topics include roster strategy, potential last-minute moves, and whether the Mets should chase additional pitching or trust their current lineup heading into spring camp.
Is this rotation built for a deep postseason run, or will unproven talent and rival aces shake things up?

Best case scenario in my delusional mind..
– Sean Manaea can find his 2024 ways after having some much needed time to work on his mechanics after coming off his injury last year.
– Clay Holmes was probably our most consistent starter last year. After a full year of starting, I'm hoping he's properly adjusted to where he can maintain 5/6+ innings per start. Also, hopefully he lowers his BB/9.
– David Peterson was our most effective starter for the longest amount of the season, until he pretty much face planted (Possible fatigue). Hopefully he's figured out some good cardio or strength training to prevent gassing out towards the end of the season.
– Kodai Senga was arguably having a Cy Youngish beginning of the season before he got injured. He was never the same after he came back and we all need to see if he's mentally overcome whatever he was going through towards the end of the season. If he can start this season the way he started last season and figure a way to maintain throughout, he can work his way towards the top of the rotation.
– Nolan McLean was probably 1 of the best things about last season. We're all just hoping he can maintain last years stats for a full season. Even if they're a little inflated from last year, it would still be a plus!
– Freddy Peralta was probably Top 2-3 starters of the National League last year. If he can replicate anything close to last year for us this year, that would be amazing.
How realistic is it that all of these changes happen?? Probably not much! But I have hope! Lol
It’s time to Win the Division That’s Goal Number 1 .. forget squeaking into playoffs…
Im old school. The term "Ace", to me, is interchangeable with "one". Every team has a number 1 starter and every team has an ace. An ace may be an unhittable CY candidate, but does not have to be.
I absolutely don’t agree with this. Love Peralta and McLean. Holmes is ok. But Peterson, Senga, and Manaea are 🗑️
If Senga & Manaea suck again, then no.
Likely Menbozo will wreck the bullpen by mid-May and then be fired.
I'm still sure, somehow, Tylor MeGill is opening day starter
That’s a bold statement
Rotate Baty and Benge in LF. Rotate Vientos and Polanco at 1B / DH. I feel Vientos going to come back to 2024 playoff form. Need reps everyday. We need one more good starter or reliever
The Mets really need an innings eater. Last year the bullpen wore down due to overuse. It will be interesting how much they protect Nolan and how deep they will let him go. Hopefully another year of starting will get Clay to go a little further next year. They might have a couple pitchers in the pen that go 2-3 innings each appearance. I like the idea of having a starter or two in the the pen that pitch go 3-5 innings once a rotation. It could really save the pen. I can't believe anyone hasn't signed Griffin yet.
Not even close 😂
I still don’t think Freddy is better than Nolan even though Nolan only had 8 starts last year. I’ve never seen anyone with movement like Nolan.
After all the effort and resulting strife that went into changing the clubhouse culture are we really considering the return of Chris Backzit?
I hate the way he handled covid, he acted like a crybaby
No. The Phillies Braves and Marlins are still actual teams, you know that right?
Clay Holmes was the only consistent pitcher last season.
Peterson clearly ran out of gas…he pitched almost 50 innings more than he had ever pitched before. Holmes was pitching as a starter for the first time. Manaea was injured. Senga was never the same after the Alonso play. The talent is there…the question is will they be healthy. If they are, I fully expect them to push each other this season…good pitching is contagious (as is bad pitching, as we saw)…
Ok, how about Trout as LF and Angles pay half his salary next 5. 😮 What a bat to slot into the cleanup spot. Wow!!!🎉
As far as the rotation; #1 – Peralta, #2 – Peterson, #3 – McLean, #4 -Holmes makes sense to me. Insert Peterson as #2, why? A lefty is a whole different game after facing Peralta and he has done it as a MLB starter. McLean then has less pressure, brings power and high spin, then followed by Holmes who like you point out maybe now goes into 5.5 or 6 innings. What a #4 to have! That leaves Manaea and Senga to be 1) healthy and 2) willing to battle it out for spot 5. Also often after the first month in the season, #5 or 6 starter lines up against the oppositions #1. No other team in NL has these two capable pitchers actually competing against a #1. 😅
See got it all figured out! 😂😂😂
Trade Peterson while we can. Chris B and Jose W should still be Mets
They have the potential but with our history, it’s really hard to put them ahead of PHI / ATL without seeing them in progress.
I’m in the minority and expect a bounce back from Williams but also think the other teams have better guaranteed production from their closers
If the Mets' pitching staff could stay healthy the entire season and go more than 5 innings, then yes, I agree, but I don't see that happening. You also need a bullpen, and I'm not in love with what they have in the pen right now. You have no closer.
Sorry man we don’t have the best rotation in the East. Phillies and maybe Braves are better. Peralta and McLean. Everyone else is a question mark. Get Valdez then the rotation is Solid.
Peterson manaea and Senga couldn’t make it out 3 innings it’s the same rotation plus 1 come on now 😂
What senga are we getting
Agree Mets have the best and most depth in their rotation in the NL east- Freddy Pelata is not ace tho, disagree and stats back it up. . Got a bit lucky last season. He's a 3.35- 3.75 era pitcher. He averages 5.33 ip per start. i am sorry, but that is not an ace.
In the last 3 years, his fip was over 3.64 each year and as high as 4.16
An ace doesn't have a fip that high
Be careful adding salary if we want to extend Peralta cuz it's not going to be cheap
Mets will be a 3rd place team, at BEST.
You can tell Mets fans are slowly getting over Pete, because I’ve never heard so many people talk about him throwing a jump ball for Senga. All due respect to Freddy, he’s never been a guy known to be that innings eating bulldog. 170 is 10 more than Senga in a year where me missed ROY because “he didn’t pitch enough”
Not even close. Need another big arm
I screaming top 5 rotation in baseball now Ryan says everyone bumps down 1 slot I argue its 2 spots Nolan wasn't part of the rotation until the very end of last season so our staff went from Peterson or Senga who was our 1 most of last year to them 2 moving back to 3 through 5 if just 1 of the youngsters emerge such as Jonah,Jack,or, Tobias we will be so dangerous all you nay sayers are about to find out
I think the Mets should re-sign Kris Benson.
The name of this episode: Ryan trying to convince himself that the Mets rotation is not 4th in the NL East.
We have A Squad.. Up to the Pitching to get it
Lmao this is troll bait. Peralta is NOT AN ACE. He's a solid #2. We do NOT have an ace and haven't since deGrom left.
We have seen this story before. When they brought in Santana with an incomplete homegrown core. They had no other ace in that rotation. I love McClain, but the bullpen is no bueno. The idea was to put a flame thrower in front of Diaz. That would have been Sproat. Now we have neither. So, is this a 90 plus win team? Most likely. Could it blow its leads in the playoffs and send us home heart broken? Likely. If so, is this a long term arc moving upwards like '84 '85' etc and ready to beat up the Dodgers eventually? Only if we have a young core with more flame throwers. Did we just trade it away?
Improved.
This is the most improved staff in the National League East.
Man you are making my heart ❤️ sing😮😊🎉❤again!!!!!
lol. No. Still Phillies provided Wheeler stays healthy. If Strider shakes off the rust the Braves will contend for it too. Much better though!
Like the Mets offensive … potential is high but few guarantees.
We’re the best you’ll see when we get to the World Series LGM
We need a depth outfielder and bullpen help then we’re good to go
I’m really excited for this season
Jonah Tong is going to be pushing his way into rotation this year. I think. have to love the job Stearns is doing!!!!
depth yeah, heck of a lot of questions outside Peralta and possibly McLean. McLean only pitched 9/10 games
No need for another starter. We also have Tobias Myers
I'd say Peralta is a firm #2 type starter. Over the last 3 years he's averaged 31.7 starts. 172 ip. 205 k. 3.40 era. However, he only pitched in the 7th inning 6 times in 95 starts. He finishes 6 innings quite often, but rarely came out for the 7th in Milwaukee. Peterson did it 17 times in 23 fewer starts. So I wouldn't expect to see Freddy trotting out in the 7th to many times. Unless the Mets decide to use him differently.
I think Peralta is a huge add to the Mets rotation and I have not wavered in my support of Cohen and Stearns.
The Mets have two really good pitchers in Peralta & McClean; the others are a complete toss up. I suspect the rotation will look decent until the arms get fatigued, as they did last year. Stearns needs to find more durable guys (e.g., Valdez), but he will roll with this rag tag group of guys, figuring he can work some kind of Harvard magic to maximize their talent.
Zach Wheeler is one of the biggest mistakes this franchise has made has ever made. A lot of our “fortunes” would have been different if he was retained.
Still think they need one more pitcher at top of rotation to compete with LA, Phillies, etc
