Hughes: “Among the names I’ve heard linked to the Jets as they search for a veteran play caller to add to their coaching staff: Frank Reich.
Tanner Engstrand is not expected to call plays in 2026, per sources.
While the Jets are still determining his role, a new play caller is expected to be added to the staff.”

  1. Finally some half way decent news! So we definitely wont draft a smaller QB! Frank would want to work with a prototypical sized QB. Let's see what happens!

  2. Both Reich and Glenn were on the Jets roster in 1996, for a brief overlap. I remember Reich making a start. He’s a good offensive mind. Engineered the greatest playoff comeback I’ve ever seen as a Buffalo Bill against Warren Moon and the Oilers. And he was Boomer Esiason’s college roommate in Maryland. I’m kind of surprised he’d want to come here.

  3. If Glenn is trying to turn things around a guy like Reich is a solid option. He isn't McVey or Shanahan, he is very much a run oriented offense that is fairly conservative. That said having been a QB he isn't exactly unaware of what other schemes do.

Given the QB hell jets are in ( hopefully Glenn doesn't think Reich could resiscutate fields ) having someone who was a QB and has coached QBs in his career is huge with whatever QBs they bring in or draft.

That he was a head coach helps a bit too, he did make the playoffs.

The real question is what is his role? Is Engstrand technically the OC and Reich a consultant? As others pointed out the jets if they are giving him.the OC role have to interview other coaches , specifically to abide by the Rooney rule. So.they may keep Tanner as OC but give play calling over to Reich.

Is this a killer hire? No, but unlike a lot of his coaches it isn't a head scratcher .

  4. I understand bringing him in but personally I loved engstrands OC ability. He got breece his yards even though the box was always stacked. And he had WRs running open especially in the middle of the field. That's what you want in today's nfl. Seems like jets get these talented OCs (like lafleur and engstrand) set them up to fail with horrible qb play (wilson, fields) and then they fire or demote them and the guy we bring in is outdated. Idk seems dumb. Shanahan couldn't make trey lance work so why do we expect anyone with Wilson or fields to get results as an OC?

  5. Hes the perfect type of OC. Someone whos an average-above average playcaller who failed an an HC on more than one occasion. Means that IF hes successful he wont get poached after a great year.

  6. As a player, Frank Reich led his Maryland Terrapins and later the Buffalo Bills to the greatest comeback victories in NCAA and NFL post-season history respectively at the time. He's definitely an upgrade over Tanner Engstrom as an OC, but ultimately his success will depend on who is at QB.

  7. Finally a coach with expirence someone who knows what they are doing i am not going to go into what's Reich has or hasn't done if they hire him he becomes the most intelligent person in the building compared to what they have now

  8. It’s comical we have to hire experienced OC and DC to lead the offense and defense because the HC doesn’t have the experience.

Reich and Martindale would be great hires tho.

  9. My take is if the Jets hire Frank Reich they would bring him on as an Assistant Head Coach with the responsibility of Primary Play Caller. Engstand will keep his title as Offensive Coordinator but will be moved up to the Crows Nest on Game Day. Reich will serve as a tutor to Engstand. I would expect Reich and the Jets to work out a contract of 3 to 5 Years in length.

  10. I don't know what to think at this point. I just can't envisage a turnaround in the franchise without a serious owner who wants success on the field not just in the media circus.

  11. First coaching candidate that makes any sense at all — for HEAD coach. And even there, I'm not sure Reich is the guy to pick a QB in the 2026 draft, based on what he's done to date.

  12. The Hiring of Wink and Reich would only confirm that Woody’s son is on Twitter, seeing all the “we need Vet Coaches on the staff” tweets, and showing them to Woody. The Jets are always Reactive and never Proactive.
