[Rapoport] Sean McDermott is likely taking a year off from coaching

  1. Not surprised given the available options.

Could see him doing well with the Bucs or Bengals next year.

  2. As much as the players loved him, I’m sure he loved the players too. Gotta be tough to just jump into a new locker room. All the best to Coach McDermott

  3. The question is whether that is voluntary or not. I’m guessing the. Browns and Cards, if not the Raiders, would be interested, so I’m guessing this is his choice. Also, it takes effort to prep for an interview and assuming he was blindsided, he may just not feel good about diving in this deep into the hiring cycle. Or maybe he just wants to hold out for that sweet JETE gig that’s going to open up at some point. Actually, given his coaching history with Andy Reid, I wouldn’t be super surprised to see him take a gig with KC like Vrabel did in Cleveland.

  4. What if Reid retires after next season, him and McDermott are good friends. What a kick in the balls that would be.

  5. Once Pittsburgh and Baltimore were filled, I assumed this would be the case. LV would be interesting with first overall pick and high picks in general, a lot of cap space, and some good players to build from in Bowers, Crosby, and Jeanty. I forgot what podcast I listened to, but they said his dream job is Philly and he might be waiting out for Sirianni to implode

  6. I think he’s exactly what the Raiders need to rebuild and become successful, but I can understand not wanting to move to the desert when you’ve battled skin cancer.

I also can’t imagine trying to perform well in interviews when you’ve just been fired and treated poorly by the team you took to the playoffs in multiple consecutive seasons. I don’t know how your head could even remotely shift directions so quickly.

Whichever team ultimately gets him will benefit and be fortunate to do so.

  7. I don’t blame him at all. Take a year off and get back into it when he feels ready. I wish him all the best.

  8. Can’t blame him. This has been a hard week for him and he’s probably emotionally drained. It may do him some good to sit back for a year. It’s not like he won’t be sought after when he comes back. Good luck out there coach.

  9. We’ve had leaks about every single HC interview in the league within minutes for weeks, including the from the Bills.

    Not one about Sean.

  10. So, he’ll be doing whatever it is he did on every defensive time out and most 3rd and longs…

  11. Smart call. Take the cash and see what opens up. The only job that’s even remotely desirable right now is the Raiders job with Mendoza on the way and Tom Brady involved with personnel.

The Cardinals and Browns seem like a nightmare.

  12. Uncle Terry better invite him to the opening of the new stadium, he sure as hell deserves it.

  13. After 9 years being a head coach in the NFL, basically missing your family for 5-6 months of the year, I can understand this. Plus, he’s pulling down 8 million a year of Pegula’s coin for 2 years, so good for him.

  14. Rest up King, you’ll be back.

Bucs / Commanders / Eagles might have openings, head to the other conference my dude.

  15. He wasn’t a great coach and the teams with vacancies probably didn’t want him.

  16. I honestly think he would be great for the Raiders. He could change the culture around that team, and has 4 good players to build with in Mendoza, Jeanty, Bowers, and Crosby. Brady should go hard on him

  17. Not a lot of prime jobs available. He can do tv for a year or two and pick his spot w his resume.

  18. Probably his best bet after every win-now team already hired a HC. Rebuilding the Raiders, Browns, or Cardinals sounds like a miserable job.

  19. He said as much last night at Sahlens sports park (/south of Buffalo), his son was there doing football drills while my son had a soccer match. He was very cool and talked to about any and everyone.

  20. The Vegas job could’ve been appealing but I get it, big name coaches tend to take the year off most of the time.
