>MLB’s minor league option rules have a unique quirk: An optioned player only loses one of his three options if he spends 20 days in the minor leagues.

Oof.
Sure, but when we have no healthy SP’s you kind of have to grasp at straws and make less than optimal choices. Also, Bryce Elder can be replaced with a position player, they couldn’t do worse.
> Atlanta recalled him on March 31st, however, as they always intended to use him during the seven-game road trip to open the season.
They recalled him because Reynaldo Lopez had a shoulder injury
