KC appears to be using a fiscally responsible approach, although that may be an issue with ownership that does not have cash to offer the type of contracts that have large signing bonuses that some teams are offsetting with void years.

If that is not the case, they have the option during the next couple of offseasons to load up on re-signing homegrown talent and free agents if they find a group of core players they believe they can make another 5+ year run with Mahomes under contract and in his prime.

  1. You can use void years fiscally responsible.

Not using them puts us at a disadvantage.

Doesn’t have to be crazy, just be ~16th and it helps us sign an extra proven starter in FA or spend up a tier at two positions.

  2. It depends. It can be ownership, I think it’s the QB.

The Chiefs SB window is open as long as Mahomes can play. Some teams see a window and go for it. And then you get the Saints.

  3. Spotrac shows Mahomes having void years in 2032 and 2033; 60mil each year. So move this graph out two more years and we jump from 27 to 5.

  4. This is the real metric. Not the “projected salary cap” bullshit. We all knew Philly sold their soul to the devil to win last year.

  5. We might need some void years to make the team viable next year.

Mahomes has like a 78 million dollar cap hit and we have to take our medicine on it at some point.

We could void year Chris Jones and cut jawaan and be able to absorb some of the hit from Mahomes that needs to be swallowed

They’ll probably restructure him again but I hope they dont

  6. The problem is if we use stuff like void years and get a few Frank Clark/Hitchens type contracts. We’ve boned ourselves for a few years mortgaging the future.

Then we really run the risk of more years like this one.

But really, we also have a much lower incentive to do void years because of Mahomes contract. It being 10 years meant the team was always able to push money as far along as they want.

The money you’d see in this chart is just rolled into Mahomes contract. They have to do void years because other contracts don’t always have 5 full years on them.

I won’t be surprised if we see another extension soon.

  7. I don’t think functionally void years help the Chiefs much with how Mahomes contract is structured. They can restructure forever with how large it is, and the $75M+ cap hits end after 2027. More likely to happen after 2027 is Veach tears it up and gives Mahomes a new one with even more room to restructure.

AJ Brown drama is the main reason why using them is not worth it IMO. Everyone on this sub wants to cut Chris Jones and trade Trent McDuffie after one bad year: that wouldn’t be possible if they were on long contract extensions with 99% of the salary paid in prorated signing bonuses.

  8. I’m looking forward to seeing the NFL’s solution to Philly’s use of void years. What will they do if Philly stacks them for a rebuild and they can’t pay a 53 man roster the league minimum?

  9. For all the consternation about our current cap number for 2026 being ~$50M over the limit, I take great solace in knowing that we have not abused void years, and therefore, we can always push our money into future seasons, knowing that the future cap space is there to cover it. We can always go crazy with void years when Mahomes is 40 years old and contemplating retirement to keep the cap situation manageable.
