Byard: Phenomenal this year but hes 32 and could fall off next year but still I think he is important

Brisker: Was quite bad this year in coverage and could be too expensive for us

OZ: Trash, his spot will be replaced by Jahdae next year

CGJG: Started off hot but started to get cooked playing nickel at the end of the season still would like to bring him back

Braxton: Both Theo and Trapilo are better than Braxton plus we still have Kiran if he turns into anything

Nahshon: His ints came off of JJ Mccarthy 2x, Joe flacco on a hail mary, Spencer Rattler and Mason Rudolph when he was not getting turnovers most of the time he was getting burned for touchdowns I do not want him back

Djack was our best Linebacker this year and still in his prime I dont think we can afford to lose him

  1. D Jack played well in his fill in for Sewell. I think re-sign him is a good move and try to get more value on the DL

  2. I think he’s an option if Sewell and TJ are missing for a chunk of next year. We need a quality player who can play in our system for cheap. Unless teams are lining up to pay him he’s probably a safe signing that won’t cost us much.

  3. I’m only bringing back one of the safeties out of all the FAs. All our one year guys played well, and that’s great. I wish them luck. I don’t want the bears to have more Odeyingbo contacts on the books. Hopefully he can be the guy who breaks out and we let go of next.

  4. Byard is more important. Better player, leadership role, and if he goes we have no choice but to sign someone else. Jackson played well and we should keep him, but he’s not even a starter when everyone is healthy. Now if we cut Edmunds for cap savings that makes him a more important signing, but I think we renegotiate rather than cut Edmunds since we can get almost as much savings while keeping the player. Jackson over Sewell though every time if we are choosing a depth linebacker.

  5. Can’t be only one who thought Zaccheus is just okay? Got too many targets at start of the year for sure but as cheap depth he’s fine, wouldn’t stop me drafting a late round flyer to compete with him though for sure

  6. Replacing both safeties seems the taller task that big a hole can lead to compensation decision making rather than optimal. So byard and Brisker get a bump until one is signed. I also agree with others that say it’s just straight up Byard though. Best player and best mentor in all likelihood.

  7. You could be right. Because he’s the most athletic LB on a defense that desperately needs more athletes—particularly more speed

  8. I’d rather see him starting over Edmunds. Tremaine was honestly a liability 90% of the time this year

  9. For the most part think you’re tripping.

To me byard is most important because his production and presence seem to be the most difficult to replace. I am also concerned he could lose a step but then again go look at his interception against the saints where he gets all the way back across the field to make an int on a play wright got burned on and tell me how many safeties are making that play anyway.

CJ will be too expensive for the limited value he added to bring back

Interesting that you’d advocate for Walker to replace OZ over burden getting a larger role.

Dont think you can count on trapilo for anything. There’s only a 50/50 chance he returns from the injury he got. Seems worth hedging to bring back jones with LT unknown but will probably be too expensive.

    Agree on nashon.

It’s hard to argue against d jack being the most effective linebacker, especially if you weigh availability in that decision. Hard to argue against the guy that was the most available player.

  10. To me, it’s not a coincidence that when TJ got injured vs the scumbags and Jackson came in, we started to play better. That second half v Green Bay and the Rams game were 2 of our best defensive performances all year.

  11. On Braxton Jones, he spent most of the year on IR and he suffered a major injury at the end of the prior year.

I’m thinking he isn’t going to get a starting LT offer from anyone in the league and he may want a one year prove it type deal. If that’s the case and he is healthy and back to full strength, I don’t believe he was at full strength from his injury, he could be worth a shot. In addition to just wanting to win, if he has a decent season he is going to secure $100m next off-season

  12. considering the long term injuries to sewell and edwards it might make sense to keep djack around, especially considering he knows DA so well. I think it would make sense to cut or trade edmunds, he’s too expensive for what he’s produced.

  13. I think it’s a mistake to put a “most important” label on any potential free agent. There are too many factors at play.

That said, I’m hesitant to commit to Jackson as a starter for next season. #1 Backup? Absolutely.

  14. Fine player but I won’t blink if they don’t decide to bring him back. There’s not really any resigning candidates I would be bent out of shape over losing. Maybe Brisker or Byard, but if they sign for big contracts I probably can live with it.

  15. He’s in the top three. We’re going to cut Edmunds, and by all accounts Jackson outplayed him this year. He’s going to come relatively cheap, and save the Bears a chunk of cap space.

  16. Edward’s and Edmund’s suck! The worse linebackers in the nfl. Get burned on every pass to their receivers.

  17. As long as we get rid of Jaylon Johnson…that guy missed more tackles and was walking more than any other player I’ve seen.

  18. It’s probably him or Byard TBH. OZ is the most easily replaceable player of the bunch. WR3 could be anybody. Heck, we have Luther Burden at home.

DJack is underrated at LB. He usually wears the green dot and he played on special teams too. I think he wouldn’t be super expensive either.

  19. Renegotiating contracts is most important. I think the bears can sign Jackson, nashon, byard, and brisker for cheap.. let’s see if thuney, Jonah, DJ, Dayo (if he applies) and Tremaine can be restructured. TJ is the biggest question mark., down season and broken leg I’m
Not sure what his future is here

  20. Anyone telling you Byard is more important doesn’t know ball. The fact is, the run defense improved significantly when Jackson was in there and calling the defense. He knows DA’s defense and how to line guys up.

Now, should he be your starting MLB? He can be, but maybe you want someone more athletic eventually in that spot. But if you re-sign him, that’s one less hole you need to fill for now, can always upgrade later, and you have someone that can call the defense properly in that role while you focus on bigger needs (DT, Safety).

Byard is a nice story and a good leader, but he is similar to CJ that he disappears when not getting turnovers. I’d bring him back on a team-friendly deal, but Jackson knowing how to call defensive plays and being a decent run defender makes him far more important to get back.

  21. Listen, I don’t know if resigning Braxton is the answer, but LT is definitely 1a or 1b now.

Trappilo probably won’t even play next year after that injury and may never be the same.

  22. Byard is an important leader on the backend. JJ and Gordon dont like dictating the backend coordination.

  23. No he is not. He did a great job as a backup and made the most of his opportunity but hyper focusing on him could be looked at as Jack Sanborn-itis. First, the Bears only use 2 linebackers most of the time, and young, hungry, aggressive linebackers come pretty cheap in the NFL. Second, the position he plays is Edwards’ spot, who has led the team in tackles the last couple years but had chronic injury issues this year. Edwards is also a favorite of ownership, who doesn’t have player decisions, but a GM isn’t going to give up on him too soon and have him go ball out on another teams and look bad because of it.

  24. Bear fans didn’t want to sign Byard because he was already old and could fall off.

Then he had his most career tackles.

Bear fans were worried about him dropping off this year. Now he’s All Pro 1.

If anything he’s getting better with age.

Any contract he signs will keep this in mind. Reward and keep your older all pro talents. Let them retire with you.

Can you imagine if we let Byard go last season and didn’t bring in Thuney because they are in their 30s now?

Had we kept Mack instead of signing Dayo the team wouldn’t have lost to the Rams.
