CJ Abrams, SS, Washington Nationals

The Nationals are not shopping Abrams, but they are listening and they will have to consider a trade if they can move him for a huge package like they received for trading MacKenzie Gore to the Rangers. However, unlike in the Gore trade, if they deal Abrams, they will need either major-league ready players back or prospects in the upper-levels who are close to the show.

Abrams is a 25-year-old shortstop whose best position ultimately is going to be second base, most likely. He was an All-Star in 2024 when he hit 20 homers and stole 31 bases. There are areas of his game that still need improvement, however: better plate discipline, chasing less out of the zone and finding a way to get on base more often. That said, with his speed/power combination and his prime years ahead of him, his trade value may never be higher.

If the Nationals can deal Abrams for a package of three-to-five good prospects, that’s probably their best play to further their rebuild at this point. The Giants made a run at Abrams already and remain a potential match. Solid potential trade partners also include the Red Sox, Yankees, Padres and Mariners.

  1. Please no.

    Volpe and Cabs are better

    Edit: Allow me to clarify.

Volpe provides very good SS defense. So does Cabs. Abram’s defense is awful, and his bat doesn’t bridge that gap.

In addition, the cost for CJ makes it even more clear that we should stick with who we have.

Maybe if the Yankees see upside

  2. Nationals are severely overestimating the value of a league average bat with piss poor defense. Understand he has control, but he’s not great

  3. I think we would’ve matched up better pre-Bellinger. I don’t really see a fit now. They’d have to get Abrams and unload either Jazz or McMahon

  4. Except for his baserunning, this dude’s savant page is bluer than the ocean. I’m genuinely confused how he’s an above average hitter with metrics this bad.

  5. In top of all the other potential issues people are highlighting, this just makes our lineup too lefty.

  6. For the Yankees needs he’s a worse version of what they have in Jazz. Certainly not something I’d give up 3-5 good prospects for.

  7. We need a short stop bad, but getting another guy who can’t field the position probably isn’t the way to go

  8. He’s not a fit. He has upside, under control, young. Already been an all-star. But as others have pointed out, he’s not good defensively and he’s left handed. There’s no reason to expend prospect capital for him.

  9. I will never forget Nelson laughing at Abrams suspension for being out late at the casino,

He said something like, “I’d rather a player be out experiencing the world, than in their room playing video games till 4am,”

Absolute legend. He kills me when he’s doing color

  10. You guys want to the Yankees to trade for a player who is really a league average 2B? 🤔🤡
