I’d argue the lowry trade was worse lol this only happened because of it
This trade, the Poeltl trade, the Lowry trade…. take your pick.
Oh norm I miss you man
It’s looking like the Poeltl trade will have cost us a FRP and 2 SRPs and then it might cost us a FRP and more to dump him
So overall Poeltl’s cost to us is gonna end up being 2 FRPs and multiple SRPs.
I really like Yak but good lord what an awful trade and then the extension. His 4/78m contract was fine but the trade for him and the extension after… woof
2020s Raptors have had so many bad trades that this sub defends:
Norm for GTJ
Thad for a FRP
Jakob for a FRP
Lowry for Precious
Oh no this trade sucks because Koloko got blood clots, how did the FO not know that he was going to develop blood clots. What are they stupid?
“We really have wanted Thad Young for years”
I can understand the yak feelings rn, but let’s not forget what team is like with him. How would any of us know that he would have back issues right after signing his extension?
The interview with Thad saying it was rough to be here, yet he previously decided to re-sign with us… pissed me off. Oh, we’re not good enough for you, but our money is? Punk!
Wow, crazy how this sub just can’t move on and look to the future
Thad really shot up the power rankings of my most hated raptors based on how he used a public platform to badmouth Toronto after the gift of a contract Bobby and Masai gave him. Straight up clown behaviour. Get back in your ice bath you bum
Yeah imagine what our team would look like with malakai branahm on it right now 🔥
Impact wise, this is immaterial. But the thinking behind the trade was horrendous. Thad young addressed none of the teams problems (shooting, backup guards), never understood the thought process of dropping 10 spots in the draft for another PF
I am convinced that there was a back room deal with the spurs to get Kawhi. Because we get kept trading stupidities with them
Why waste time thinking about this shit?
Yes, objectively the worst. And that’s really saying something considering Dragic was the outgoing player. It really speaks to how bad Thad was.
The hoops Toronto writers were going through to defend this at the time, even the decent ones. The consensus “who cares about moving down maybe 10 spots in the draft we have Masai” was the most idiotic ball-licking there ever was. The move was ridiculous from second 1, explained away as a brilliant and necessary cap move as if that was the only way we could get under.
In all honesty, if this is all you’ve got, I will take it.No front office is perfect. Every front office makes mistakes. Sometimes deals don’t work out the way you think they will.
It’s the move to get Poeltl. We should’ve traded FVV for whatever and joined the Wemby sweepstakes. Heck, probably should’ve traded Siakam, too, cause the haul would’ve been greater.
That core was clearly not working and our record was right at borderline and we would’ve got a decent lottery pick out of it at minimum. Instead, we take ourselves out of the sweepstakes, artificially worsening our pick (take Gradey Dick with it), we get embarrassed out of play-in, and we lose the lottery pick the following year because Masai Ujiri and co. were too arrogant to put a proper protection on the pick.
Set us back for years and direct cause of recent struggles before this year. I’d say even current core is not as strong as it could be because of that one trade and will be the ultimate reason it doesn’t go that far before next rebuild.
Poeltl was worse because it was a much better pick and the team’s fascination with him has led to further errors(the extension for no reason) that now has them handcuffed and unable to make easy deals in a market where a ton of talent seems to be available.
What front office doesn’t have questionable moves?
If the worst you have is those two trades that’s actually a good look.
They haven’t been perfect by any stretch but the front office that did those moves also brought an extended period near the top with a chip and has a half decent rebuild going on right now.
They got Ingram on the cheap, Barnes and CMB were great draft picks and the OG trade was excellent all things considered.
IMO their tendency to overpay has been a much bigger issue than the overall quality of their moves.
My money is on that being a move that the owners forced because it would get them below the tax. They should have found something better but it entirely looked like a cost saving measure for no reason other than to get that sweet tax money, which I believe was like $10-14M that year, so I also completely get it.
Fuck Gorgan Dropdick.

Come on, we have AI nowadays even (I wish it was Allen Iverson)
It was a good pick too. Better than the pick they used to draft OG and Pascal. Can you believe it!
You have to remember this was also done to duck the tax by dumping Dragic’s contract. It’s not exactly a 1st for Thad alone.
