Michael Hoecht Bills Interview: Rehab Update, Position Switch Journey & Bills Mafia Love

Michael Hoecht joins the Centered on Buffalo podcast for a candid, in-depth conversation with host Eric Wood!

The versatile Buffalo Bills defensive end/outside linebacker opens up about his Achilles injury from the 2025 season against the Chiefs, his current rehab grind in Buffalo, staring at the new stadium while recovering, and his clear goal to be ready for Week 1 in 2026.

Hoecht shares his excitement about playing in new defensive coordinator Jim Leonard’s scheme — including the move toward more 3-4 fronts, how Ed Oliver fits perfectly (with Aaron Donald-style comparisons), building the defense around talent, creative pressures and stunts from his Rams experience, and why modern 3-4 looks are all about athleticism and movement rather than massive nose tackles. He reflects on his unique journey: Ivy League roots at Brown, dropping from 310 lbs as a three-technique to 270 lbs as an outside linebacker, his first-ever coverage drop against Travis Kelce at Arrowhead, the six-game suspension, exploding back onto the field against the Panthers, and the legendary sideline energy after his injury that endeared him to Bills Mafia.

  1. Hey Eric, great interview as always. You seem so relaxed and social, have you always been a well spoken people person? Did you always think you'd be doing what your doing post playing career?

  2. If this guy had been healthy in the playoffs, the Bills would have been in the SB. I'm not saying they'd have beaten Seattle, but I truly believe they'd have won in Denver and also in NE. My opinion, obviously, but he's THAT impactful.

  3. i forgot about this guy… he was awesome when he played lol jesus christ we have a lot of injuries; compared to other playoff teams, we really have been riddled with injuries

  4. Great interview Eric! Loved hearing from Hoecht. His attitude and professionalism is my take away. Can’t wait to see this dude on the field again. Good luck on the recovery Michael and Go Bills!
