BLOCKBUSTER TRADE?: Buffalo Bills Weigh MOVE for Dexter Lawrence Amid Contract Drama

Buffalo Bills face a franchise-altering decision: should Brandon Beane pursue a blockbuster trade for New York Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence? With All-Pro production and dominant run-stuffing ability, Lawrence’s potential arrival could transform Jim Leonhard’s front seven. Financial maneuvering, including a possible Dion Dawkins restructure, and trade package speculation heighten the stakes. Is giving up a first-round pick—and a massive contract extension—worth landing the NFL’s premier nose tackle for a playoff push?
Joe Marino breaks down every angle of the Dexter Lawrence scenario, assesses the risk of costly roster swings, and questions why the Giants would walk away from one of their cornerstones. Other highlights include insight into Greg Rousseau’s new outside linebacker role, the uncertain future of Landon Jackson, and Jordan Hancock’s quest for positional stability. Can the Bills make the cap math work and finally shatter their playoff ceiling with the right additions?

  1. A premier player at a big need, but 1) it'll really put us cash and draft capital poor and 2) our salary cap situation in 2027 would look HORRENDOUS. Something like 65M over the cap to start. I think keeping the first round pick is the better option.

  2. Lol, the bills fanbase have been subjected to playing it 'safe' so much they can't even get behind trading for a TOP 3 DT???
Haven't you learnt anything from the Eagles?? These are the moves you have to make to get over that hump and go all-in for it. So yes, if they can, they should 100% try to get the deal done.

  3. With so many 24-25 year olds coming into the draft, because of COVID, the next couple years, I don’t mind trading picks for proven talent, that’s 27-28 years old. I’ve seen Mocks where we take Messidor at 26. Wouldn’t you rather trade for Lawrence? For sure! Another great epi! Keep up the good work Joe!

  4. Not gonna set myself up for disappointment lol – any second the Bills’ “breaking news” will be a re-signing of Bosa lol

  5. If we get Dexter, we go to the SB barring health. Especially if we keep oliver, oliver dexter and walker… As our starting 3 DTs in the 3/4 system. Holy hell just imagine that

  6. What kills me is that well there may be exceptional depth in this year's class, we really need a number one wide receiver as well and we really need to get him drafted and get him developed ASAP. That's too huge needs, nose tackle and wide receiver. Hopefully Beane can figure it all out

  7. Bills just love staying in salary cap hell. Reality is we need to start drafting some impact players that can grow with our team. No disrespect to dex but he’s way too expensive at his age and coming off a poor season.

  8. Played high school football against him. He would throw offensive linemen around with the ease of a grown man playing against a pee wee football team

  9. Landon Jackson was at the bottom of my draft board way before the Bills selected him. I saw so many red flags pre draft. I couldn’t believe it when they drafted him 😮 He’s exactly what I thought he was going to be. A bust! Really made me question their scouting department when they made that pick😢 I hope he was a McDermott player. That would make me feel better

  10. Of all the needs we have, i just want the secondary to be rock solid and deep. Our kryptonite in the post season, literally all of our losses to KC and the loss to Denver, our secondary was decimated, vulnerable, exposed and embarrassed.

  11. Great pod Joe! I think you laid it out perfectly as you always do. There will be some cap gymnastics to make it happen, but i think they can make it happen if they wanted to.

The question is cost benefit (as you laid out nicely). Is the benefit of having a true gameplan wrecker on your defense worth the picks and salary that will have to be paid? I know the war cry is to get cost controlled players and I agree with that in most cases, but Dexter is a true gameplan wrecker. There are only a handful of those in the league. I am definitely interested. All NFL rosters have some highly paid FAs and/or draft and develop players on their roster. The key is to pay the ones that are truly special. Spending money is not the problem. Spending money on the wrong guys is. Would having Dexter for the next 4 years outweigh the player that they would pick at #26 and is it worth the players that you would not be able to sign because of his big price tag in future years? That is the million dollar question. And I don't have the answer, but I would be very tempted.
