Tampa could say:
“For you, the day you lost the finals was the day your franchise star goalie and your veteran defenceman and captain would have to retire out of injuries, forcing a complete rebuild of the entire team.
For us, it was just cup no2.”
Pretty sure we we’re over the cap too? no?
– “I have an army”
– “We’ve got a Coco”!
What’s the scoop on Hedman? Is he actually out indefinitely? Without him, TBL is a weakened version of itself.
cap cheating still irks me
florida teams just get away with a lot
Man what an embarassing subreddit lmao
Almost five years since the 2021 cup finals but there remains significant continuity for both teams which makes this re-match of sorts compelling. A team years past their cup wins but still formidable with experienced vets vs an underdog team that hit rock bottom but has risen beyond expectations with an injection of high end youthful talent.
Returning TB players from 2021 cup finals: Kucherov, Vasilevsky, Hedman (may not play), McDonagh (former Habs pick), Point, Cirelli, Gourde, Cernak
Gone: Stamkos, Palat, Sergachev (former Habs pick), and more
Returning MTL players from 2021 cup finals: Suzuki, Caufield, Anderson, Danault, Gallagher, Evans (edit, thought he didn’t play but actually did come back).
Gone: Price, Weber, Petry, and more
Switched sides: Perry was with the Habs in 2021 and is now with TB. And doesn’t count but fun to mention that Savard was with TB in 2021 but retired with the Habs now (or maybe he’ll be the designated EBUG).
Suzuki and Caufield were key to the 2021 run to the cup finals, being the offensive producers that got that team farther than anyone expected at the time. They had the support of some good vets who are no longer with the team. Now they return with much more experience and offensive capability but also carry the additional burden of leadership roles.
Anderson is not what he used to be but if the last reg season game against TB was any indication he can still bring that playoff grit and physicality that he did in 2021. His offense is worse now but he wasn’t a big offensive contributor in 2021 but did score the one game winner in game 4 OT back then.
Danault and Gallagher were part of the top line at the time but now they’re practically 4th liners. During the 2021 playoffs they became the main defensive shutdown line and contributed very little to offense. Gallagher was definitely playing injured as he was skating slower than usual. While Gallagher may be healthy now, his play is very much diminished compared to before. Danault is also diminished but a bit less so. Evans is likely to be taking over as the main defensive shutdown center this time around.
Don’t follow TB so can’t really comment on them other than Kucherov is still very much a world class player based on his stats this season and still a world class a-hole so it’ll be interesting what post-game comments he has this time around. Vasilevky is still one of the best goalies. Supposedly Hedman is gone due to personal reasons, which I guess makes him TB’s version of Drouin who didn’t play for Habs in 2021 playoffs for personal reasons. If Hedman doesn’t play that’s somewhat offset by Dobson’s injury for the Habs.
Fellow Canadian here (oilers fan) I hope you kick their ass this time. I know all of Canada is cheering you on (some, secretly)
