Great read from Adam Kimelman with Michkov going into the playoffs.

Is this the first English spoken interview with Matvei? Certainly the first one that I’ve come across.Super proud of him and encouraging to see his confidence growing in his second language.

Personally, I’m expecting him to thrive in the playoffs and continue his hot streak! Best time of the year! LGF!

  2. Dude how have I not heard about Alex freakin Ovechkin asking Michkov for a stick swap!! U know how bloody cool that must’ve been for Matvei?!?

    I love that he’s feeling comfortable & having fun with Bump, Barkey and Martone now up with him. U can tell it’s translated right to his play.

    It drove me nuts how a 20 yr old, who recently lost his father & is playing in a different country was being treated/talked about the first half of the year. For him to ignore it & dig in to better himself says so much about him.

    Going to be a star for this team for a long, long time.

    The four have created a bond on and off the ice.”

Really interesting to read about the social side of Michkov’s development: getting to hang out with players his age, improving his spoken English to the point where he can communicate better with Tocchet. Makes sense that his play could improve as the season progressed based on these factors.

  6. Love to see Meech learning english more to the point of giving these interviews! Huge barrier to his development is getting torn down. Thought he was more involved with the guys since the break. Wonder if the fluency is recent? He’s been such a good teammate. Has really become one of the boys.

    Now, hear me out.

    Ovi is hinting at returning. He’s a UFA.

    They both speak Russian. Matvei is the prince.

    Danny, you do have cap. We may be able to speed up his already lethal shot and get him refining his english a tad bit sooner.

    It would also be objectively hilarious to do this to both Jagr and Ovi.

  8. Like you all, I’ve been obsessed with this kid since we drafted him. I’m so fucking happy things are starting to look up after how this year started. He’s gonna be so good. I love how him, Barkey, Martone, and Bump have become friends.

    Can’t wait until we start getting regular English interviews with him!

  9. That’s awesome…stoked he’s getting better at english and especially that he’s hanging out with his young team mates. If he’s happy with his life off the ice, I’m sure it will translate to him playing better. Been waiting for him to give interviews in english for awhile now.
