From the article:

Smith-Njigba was wearing size 12 cleats during his collegiate days at Ohio State. But when he came to the NFL, the Seahawks used foot-scanning technology to get him fitted with a better-sized shoe.

"In college, he was wearing a size 12 and had hamstring issues," the Seahawks Director of Equipment, Erik Kennedy said. "Gets here, he's a 10 and a half, wears a 10 and a half… It's helped him; he hasn't missed time."

  1. It’s amazing how much getting properly fitted for shoes will help a whole bunch of other issues.

  2. It’s crazy how bad shoes can affect long-term health.

I have a family member in orthopedics who mentioned that there is a correlation between people wearing poorly fitted or badly made shoes, and the knees and below joint health issues.

  3. Stop giving away our techniques and strategies ! No but for real if it helps others stay healthy , this is great to help others

  4. I’m a big fan if you’re doing anything active you want tight shoes, tight socks, and braces of some sort on so blood flow, muscle stability, and joint stability are all supported. It helps a ton. Niners must be giving out clown shoes 😀

  5. Ohio State has way too much money thrown at its athletic departments to not properly measure their athletes for equipment

  6. I get having a shoe a half size too big or too small but a size and a half feels like an indictment of the Ohio state equipment staff

  7. Holy shit now we know why everyone on the Niners gets hurt all the time! It’s their fucking shoes!

  8. I know in the NBA, players have their own custom orthotics/insoles, I wouldn’t be surprised if the nfl had something similar with their cleats. Like if you’re a star, they probably have custom made cleats for their feet/biomechanics specifically

  9. Why the F was he wearing oversized shoes? This feels like common sense. If I played in cleats almost 2 sizes up, I’d have injuries too. I can’t imagine the amount of stress that put on his ligaments and muscles whenever he accelerated, de-accelerated, or changed direction.

  10. Huh, I wonder if this would help me. I have horribly wide feet – 5 double E when I last got measured. I have long a size 7 foot but have to settle for size 10.5 because nothing else fits

  11. I may just be projecting but I wonder if JSN grew up poor. When you grow up in a household without a lot of money it’s common for kids to get shoes extra big so you can “grow into them.” Like mom will use a couple fingers to make sure there’s enough room in the toe. He may have just gotten used to the feeling of oversized shoes and never had his feet actually measured.

  12. I wore oversized boots to work during the winter because they were the only waterproof ones I owned and I hate wet socks. After a month or so I definitely had hamstring tightness and would cramp up a lot. I never linked it to the shoes though. I thought my flesh bag was just gradually disintingrating like usual.
