  1. I really want to pick the Sens, but there are two factors that tilt this for the Hurricanes.

Goaltending: Playoffs are decided by goaltending.

Canadian teams cannot win the cup: this has been a safe bet for 30+ years. Betting against a Canadian team is always safer.

  2. You forgot one very important factor. Nicolas Deslauriers. He's the ultimate deterant because he will knock someones head off. If Ottawa wanna be Florida levels of dirty, Carolina can open that door and let him lose. But also, I don't think you properly understand this Canes team. Staal, Martinook, Carrier, Deslauriers, and every single defender will put a dude through the glass, but the guy that epitomises that is Nikishin. Watch him specifically, because he will run people over.

Also, Adam's point about bigger teams… no. Washington were bigger, the Canes beat them in 5. The Islanders are bigger, Carolina might actually own that franchise. They struggle against hot goalies. Bobrovsky, Shesterkin, Vasilevskiy, Rask. It's whether Ullmark can play at that level. If he can, Ottawa will win this series. If he can't, Carolina will move on in 5.

  3. I know you have to give your Canadian market team hope but make some real arguments. Canes have so much more playoff pedigree, better coaching, d-core (Slavin is best player in series, not 4th) and waaaay more depth. Ehlers got 70 points on the 3rd line and the fourth line can score too. I feel bad for the Senators who deserve a better fate than playing EC champs (would have won the pillow fight in the Pacific). However unlucky, the Canes are just a far superior team who never lose in the first round. Why start now that they are an improved version of themselves. Would be hilarious if the Canes put all three Canadian teams out to pasture – Ottawa in the first, Montreal in the ECF and Oilers in the SCF!

  4. Last year the Canes didn't lose because of size, they lost because Florida had a better team all around. Nobody was going to beat the Panthers third line offensively. Remember, the Canes dominated the Caps last year who was one of the biggest teams in the East (and the top seed). Also Ottawa has been worse against other playoff teams since coming back from the break than Carolina has and the one time Ottawa beat Carolina this year was when Martinook and Staal were out of the lineup. Canes in 5.

  5. As a canes fan I just feel like a lot of the things they said just aren’t very accurate. Canes have never been “run over” in any playoff series. As if they’re too small and just get dominated or pushed around. Just a totally inaccurate and lazy take.

  6. Weird that steve is vaguely the voice of reason here. We get it: small market, boring consistency, and not canadian. None of that erases that Carolina has addressed many of the concerns brought up. Most of the roster is actually over 6ft and genuinely somewhat physical, puck possession means less hits. Carrier, Martinook, Svechnikov, and inevitably Deslariers will still easily grab 5+ hits a game. If we're being intellectually honest here its not a dogwalk but they're heavy favorites for a reason (yes, sens hypers +145 is not good). No reason not to be excited about the sens and potential success, but it's the Cane's series to lose not the other way around.

  7. I feel like everyone is glossing over the fact that Kotchetkov is our best goalie theorretically and he's now available to play. Am I losing my mind? Why is he not an option?

  8. Ottawa is going to take this series. Ottawa has always been a Cinderella story through time. Don't sleep in Ottawa. Best winger and D and forward arguably in the league. Also the Brady factor. This guy is a guy that every one wants on there team but hates him on another. He is explosive and single handedly can change the pace of a game. I'm just saying

  9. I think you guys haven't seen Andersen's last handful of games, where he's seemingly played well enough for "put the vet in the net," and Brind'Amour has shown that tendency before. But we've been playing them as 1A and 1B and it would not surprise me at all if we just keep alternating them.

  10. Y'all gotta be kidding me. I get that it's not a good matchup, but the Canes are #1 in the east for a reason. At least you're granting that we should win 3 games. Canes in 6.
