  1. These three do not understand business one bit. The Leafs owners have a product in a massive market with a fanbase that will never go away. They can do whatever they want, and the fans will not go away

  2. After Toronto effusively celebrated him as a gold medal champion, why would he want to play anywhere else? Clearly Toronto was happy for their captain right?

Oh, wait…that's right; instead, Toronto was salty that the U.S won gold and even saltier that Matthews was celebrated at the White House and *gasp* shook the President's offered hand, instead of immediately reporting back to the Leafs and apologizing profusely to all Canadians. Leading, of course, to calls for him to be stripped of his captaincy and traded, and booing him his first game back.

  3. Canadian market hockey teams are in perpetual decline due to the value of CDN dollar and the fact that players are paid in USD. Canada's taxes are not competitve with most US states and players with choices are keenly aware.

  4. Trade nylander for a couple good prospects and some picks. Keep Matthews until next year and if he doesn’t want to resign trade him for even more prospects and picks. That’s as much of a rebuild as it is a retool. Is no good ufa that will help this team.

  5. Matthew’s is a goal scorer, that’s it and on other teams that have him just do that he/ will be successful. Toronto expecting way more from him especially now as captain, essentially changing his natural game up and criticize afterward for it. He’s a guy who fills A role not many ones. The team that uses him just for that, gets the best out of their team. Again, he’s a strictly, pure and natural goal scorer. He’s a role player and today’s nhl expects everyone to be able to have many which of course can be terrific IF he’s a natural all around guy that way but a player like Austin plays a simple role and that’s where he’s best.

  6. Absolutely worried about the leafs future. Especially since the organization keeps wanting to cheap everything out. They really needed to keep that medical staff that helps keep their players healthy. We got them back quicker.

  7. Mathews Answer's to direct questions are pathetic. Virtually no answer people want or need to know and he is Hiding. He is a great goal scorer but after that as a Captain Zero out of 10, as a Leader of the most historic team in the NHL next to Montreal, Zero out of 10. Does losing hurt very badly, not with this Bunch of Pathetic Jokers, all the leafs aside from J.T. who done in two years. Trade Willy and A. M. both Pathetic

  8. I think they blew it by taking too much of last year’s team apart. People seem to forget that they came within a whisker of beating the Panthers, who went on to win the Stanley Cup. Had it not been for Bennett taking out Stolarz (accident my ass), and several other uncalled injurious hacks, they probably would have won, and if they had, they were past the toughest match-up. However, the media and fans forced management’s hand and drove Marner out, and everything went downhill from there. They might barely make the playoffs with a re-tool next year, but the likelihood of getting anywhere near the Cup with this core is minimal.

  9. Austin Mathews has gotten worse over the last two years but his pay is still as much as possible…

If you weren't anywhere close to winning when he was at his best, why would you think that you have any chance with him as he is now?

  10. This might be hard to hear but I listen to these dreaming guerin calls the bad org to trade the team USA captain to come play with several great Americans and an awesome team. Anyway yall can discuss this possibility. I get if it’s too tough lol

  11. They should move on from him now, he’s a proven loser, him and willie, the leafs are NEVER, EVER going to win a cup with these soft, weak, pampered and overpaid players. They have no heart or desire to go all the way.

  12. … "you need him he does not need you" well … Steve … this is the kind of thinking that got them in the situation they are in today … YOU can call him a "star" but in my humble opinion he is only a star "on paper", in real life he was not able to produce, like a real "star", in his 10 years with the Leafs. I DO NOT CARE HOW MANY GOALS HE SCORED, he didn't do it when it really mattered …

  13. you guys had a ton of good insight into some Treliinv stuff that i never thought about. idk if its true but i believe it, i think its what Jesse said about other GMS in the league think of dealing with the useless GM known as Tree

  14. Matthews thrives in an environment where he's NOT the leader or captain of the team he's on. Look at him at 4 Nations and the Olympics: he plays fine in a system where he's not wearing the C.

I think a solid option would be him to go to Florida on the 3rd or 4th line. He can play to the strength as a great goal scorer with Marchand, while not having the stress of "I need to lead"
