I love Fred, but when we heard what Houston was offering him, it surprised a lot of people–they really forked out the cash for Fred and Dillon. I don't think people who followed the team closely were hoping the Raps would match.

But I can see why he would take offense to that.

  1. This team is perpetually catching strays in free agency. I feel like when most players say they love playing here its not genuine.

  2. He sounded very full of himself on that podcast (out the mud). I can understand why he thought he deserved the $ but he played so selfishly those final years. And wasn’t very effective at that either

  3. Houston overpaid for FVV, who was declining before the injury. I don’t blame the FO at all for not matching that offer.

It’s a business Fred, get over yourself

  4. Can you imagine how pissed the fans would be if the Raps offered him a max contract? Whatever it’s water under the bridge

  5. FVV is a certified douche. Man has the confidence of a top 3 NBA player. I really blame Masai and Bobby for not blowing up the team in February of that year. Trading for Poeltl and holding onto Fred set our rebuild back.

  6. He didn’t say anything wrong here, I don’t get it. I don’t see why I would be upset about this as a raptors fan.

  7. >VanVleet proclaimed he originally wanted to leave Toronto all along, but because he had previously played for the franchise, the front office made him an offer anway.

    >“So, the free agency was weird because, like, I knew I didn’t really want to go back to Toronto,” said VanVleet.

Don’t know why a max would be expected when this was pretty evident over his last 1-2 years, fans were picking up on the tone shift from both parties

  8. We talking about Tour dates???? That’s what we called him…his shooting stats looked like tour dates
    3/17
    4/21
    2/12
    8/29
    5/19

    Lol

  9. Boy acting like he could carry a team. He was about the 7th best player in 2019. I wish we had kept OG and Norm longer and gotten rid of Fred faster.

  10. Fred didn’t deserve that money, love the guy but I’m very happy we didn’t pay him what he wanted. Way too much. Get over yourself Fred

  11. Fred is a perfect example of a player who hasnt and will not reach his true potential because he is too caught up in his own hubris. Houston got fooled by it too and good for Fred. I am sure the Raptors offer was a) a respectful offer given the quality of player and b) so far less than what the Rockets offered it seems like bullshit to a player who is, again, completely enveloped in hubris.

Damn near 3 years later Fred. Hey man listen thanks for playing your part with the Ring. But put that energy into getting back on the court with your team champ. We’ve moved on over here.

  13. If we’re reading between the lines there was obviously some culture clash happening which was alluded to before. The money kinda push things through

  14. I understand Fred was hurt by the offer, but the core had run its course and it was time to rebuild. Professional sports is cutthroat business.

  15. Why is this guy acting like he’s proven to be worth 30 million since he went to Houston? His numbers went down and rockets haven’t won a playoff series. He averaged 17 and then 14ppg on less than 40% in his last two seasons after leaving Toronto.

  16. Wait, so now everyone’s mad that he says he knew he wasn’t returning, after the fanbase essentially turned on him in his last couple years, with multiple posts blaming him (eventually Siakam and OG as well) for getting in the way of Barnes development, and people absolutely furious we didn’t trade him out (instead trade for Poeltl)?

Sounds like he knew that time was up. And with the low ball offer and capping out in a one game play in elimination, seems like Masai finally realized too. Low ball offer to justify/make him go find another team, a late last second offer to be able to tell the fan base they actually tried to keep the player /roster intact (especially after future trading draft capital to make this roster. Business is Businessing.

This isn’t him saying he hated the city (since I know our base is extremely sensitive to guys wanting out so they are immediately going to go to that excuse) . This is him knowing his time was up, and maybe being a little sensitive to the process. But that’s pretty much it.

A bit weird timing for the article to come out though

  17. Dude is an overrated dilusional jerk. Who in the right mind thinks a career 39% shooter who is 5’11, slow, fat, older guard whose defence is laughably overrated is worth that kind of money? He is and has been one of the most overpaid guys in NBA history for the last few years.

  18. Mike James 2.0 that last year with the ball hogging yet without the efficiency, and the same style of play that doesn’t win games and inability to run an effective offense. He bounced back his first year in houston but the year after that his numbers plummeted again, even worse than his last year with Toronto. His offense is best paired with someone whonhe can catch and shoot, Lowry and Sengun, he is ill equipped to create his own 3 point shots. It was a right decision to not resign him, but we should have traded him to have got some value back at all.

  19. Fred just got lucky in t.o. to be there as Kyle was leaving. Fred is basically a C+ version of Kyle, who the team was already built around.

  20. FVV only got that much money because Houston had a ton of cap room and were rebuilding. That’s why his deal was only 2 years, he was looking for 3 or 4 but settled for the higher money shorter term.

  21. He should have been traded with Pascal and OG at times when they had real value and we could have started a nice rebuild but instead the front office was feeling sentimental and couldn’t let go.

  22. Def not worth what houston paid, he can be sour all hewants. He left for the money that’s on him

  23. Lmfao yeah im sure the Rockets are thrilled to have paid $100m for spoiled brat with an ego problem who put up 14-3-5 an 0-0-0 the last two seasons.

    He’ll be washed now

  24. Fvv was wildly overpaid at the time, houston was the only team who could pay that. End of discussion

  25. All these guys with the biggest egos imaginable who did jack shit both before and after Kawhi. Third option on any serious team even at his peak and wouldn’t have a chip if GSW hadn’t turned into a hospital squad

  26. IMO Fred got too full of himself near the end of his time with the Raptors. His last season he was going on social media pumping up his value. Nice that Houston had cap space to burn and offer him that windfall contract, but talking like Toronto FO disrespected him with their offer sounds so entitled. If anything…we know the FO tends to overpay. Better to not say anything and simply count your blessings Fred!

  27. It’s mostly another clickbait title. He didn’t really shit on the Raptors, just said the relationship changed.

“But even my meeting with them was like they knew — you know, everybody in the room knew like this s*** over with,” continued VanVleet. “But it was just almost like just a formality, like we just doing this because this what we supposed to do. And then after that, my mind was made up and s***. We agreed to sign with Houston… But s***, I couldn’t sign that s*** fast enough.”

The Raptors made a decision to move on. He made a decision to move on. Everyone did what was in their best interest. Him, Leonard, etc., were never destined to be lifers here. Fanbase has got to stop treating every player as needing to commit 100% of their careers and gratitude to billionaire employers. It’s a job, and you aren’t married to your job past contract.

  28. Why’s this guy running his mouth on our squad? Honestly if you don’t got anything nice to say follow every mothers advice and stfu. Just looking goofy now

  29. Love Fred dude was a dog. But we all knew it was over when we was tryna trade him at the deadline.

  30. this is 100% they didnt want me so i didnt want them. The noise obviously got to him, NOBODY wanted this guy back in Toronto, it was loud and clear. He was creating his culture of bet on yourself which was extremely selfish and all about trying to get yourself paid, sadly i think Siakam took some heat for this aswell

  31. I was so happy we didn’t re sign him I can vividly remember exactly where I was when I read the news

  32. Fred quite frankly confirming what many said/felt about him. He got way too big headed and it’s clear the team chemistry crashed and turned into shit despite the talent.

  33. I haven’t read the comments in here but I hope this sub isn’t going to pretend like they didn’t spend that last season exclusively coddling Scottie Barnes, and treating FVV like he was one of the biggest villains of Toronto Basketball.

That was the most toxic I’ve ever seen yall. This sub, twitter spaces, effectively ran the guy out of town, and tried to kill his reputation on the way out.

Yall called him selfish, said he was a shitty leader, a chucker, couldn’t play defense and all sorts of outlandish shit. So I don’t blame him at all for wanting out of Toronto. That final year was incredibly toxic.

Scottie wasn’t ready at the time, but the team was ready to have someone be added to it, and I have no doubts that even beyond that – that vets like FVV/Siakam etc still thought they had a chance to compete in the East if they were able to flip someone like Scottie or a #4 pick for a #1 option.

But Scottie looked good and they got to the playoffs and lost. FVV tried to get Scottie to warm up and got yelled at, the fanbase chose to take Scottie’s side and wanted the “vibes”

The reality is the fanbase wanted the rebuild around Scottie Barnes and it lead the front office to trading the rest of the team. (OG and Siakam)
