Joe Mazzulla on being in contention for Coach of the Year: “I haven’t made one basket all year. Our staff hasn’t made a basket. We haven’t gotten a block. We haven’t ran back on defense. We didn’t play in a back-to-back. We didn’t have to play hurt. We haven’t really done shit.”

  1. Does this kind of banal coach speak excite anyone except flat footed fatties?

  2. Being intentionally obtuse in an attempt to be humble is certainly a choice; no shit you didn’t get player stats as a coach sherlock

  3. it sounds like the boston media is treating this as some MVP award and we’re just getting these clips out of context. like it’s a ‘will be fired’ award lol. like how casey was gone after COTY and nurse won the title. mike brown won unanimous with the kings

  4. I find everything this dude says to be corny… is he pretending to not know what a coach does? He’s undeniably great at his job, but I don’t know why anyone would think he’s some sort of modern-day philosopher.

  5. at this point I’m not sure if I’m bothered more by the answers or the reporters who keep asking this question that he clearly doesnt want to even think about.

  6. I know this is his shtick and I’m sure everyone in the organization appreciates the value of the respective coaches and trainers behind the scenes but I’d be a little insulted if I were one of them to have him publicly dismiss my talent and contribution so flippantly.

  7. Do ppl enjoy his responses? I assume that’s why reporters keep asking him the same question? We get it he doesn’t value the COTY, how will he go on if he wins it

  8. He’s a young guy, looking for some longevity in his profession, he don’t want it

Dwane Casey (2018) – Fired in the same season.

Mike Budenholzer (2019) – Fired four years later in 2023.

Nick Nurse (2020) – Fired three years later in 2023.

Tom Thibodeau (2021) – Fired in 2025 after four years.

Monty Williams (2022) – Fired just one year later.

Mike Brown (2023) – Fired within a year.

  9. “Coaching basketball and playing basketball are different”

    -Joe Mazzulla

  10. Yea thats why it’s called coach of the year and not player of the year. We get it bro

  11. “We havent really done shit”

Coach Mazzulla SLAMS the team staff and calls them useless

  12. Simply so, he doesnt care not wants to be in the drama circle of who should be COY, making a case and whatever, if the trophy falls it falls, he dont wanna engage with all the discussion and fabricated debate about it, so if you toss those questions his way he just says:

“My team is great, and therefore i am in consideration, if you know how my team being great puts me into the conversation for the award, good. Otherwise dont expect me to tell you why or explain, i dont give a damn”

  13. I think people are taking this way too seriously. The way it reads to me is that he doesn’t consider the coaching aspect of the game as important as the players executing the game plan, so he doesn’t care about the award for coaching

  14. “Accepting this award takes away from my limited, precious time, to rewatch The Town. So just shove it up your fucking ass.”

  15. My goodness some of you are crying way too hard in these comments🤣. Trying to act like you don’t give a shit about Joe yet take every opportunity to comment the same thing under every Mazzulla post. “unoriginal dipshit😡😡😡”

I’m sure he’ll be appreciative if he wins but he wants the attention and credit on his players hard work, not on himself. Not sure why that’s so challenging for some of you. Sure he could be nicer about it, but if that’s why you’re upset then why are you being an asshole in the comments?

  16. Has the same energy as Morgan freeman at the end of Shawshank

“Go on and stamp your forms sonny, because to tell you the truth, I don’t give a shit”

  17. I don’t get why everyone in the comments is hating on Joe Mazzulla for saying this. If you don’t like him because he’s a serial killer, then that’s fine, but he’s a good coach and the players respond to him.

  18. Didn’t he host a media day where his staff shit all over the people that covers his team for about an hour?

  19. I am thinking that if Joe were awarded Coach of the Year, he would just say, “y’all gave it to the wrong person.”

  20. Joe Mazzulla is a straight up mad man. The dudes mindset and mentality are just unmatched. The Celtics are already a terrifying team but just knowing this type of dude is coaching them makes it even more daunting. The noise around him just doesn’t phase him whatsoever.

  21. So you and your staff gets paid millions of dollars a year to do nothing? If I am to take him literally, there should be so such thing as a coaching staff. Just let the players figure it out themselves. He would be out of a job.

Is it that hard to just take the question and be like, “I am nothing with my coaching staff, team and organization. The guys on the court do all the work and we just try to help facilitate them as best we can.”

He tries to do the Popovich act but with none of the charisma or charm.

  22. Misleading title. He’s not commenting on him being in contention. He’s commenting on the overall nature of the award.
