Bill Simmons: “The play-in did change my 6MOY vote. I had Jaquez over Keldon Johnson, but then Miami lost on Wednesday, and I was just like, ‘I’m going to have the 6MOY on a team that couldn’t get to the last round of the play-in?’ I switched it. That’s the league’s fault. They should’ve made us vote before the play-in game.”

  1. …nah that’s also your fault bill simmons. Also this seeding consideration for awards other than mvp really shouldn’t exist.

  2. Play-in isn’t part of the playoffs, but also isn’t part of the regular season. It’s a weird situation.

  3. Just not on RoY, then it was making it to the play-in that mattered as opposed to no showing in the 2 play-in games

  4. Yeah drop Jaime but not Kon.

And we’re supposed to believe Simmons is unbiased lol

  5. Keldon is basically the definition of 6th man, 82 games played with 0 starts and exactly 6th in total minutes played for Spurs

  6. that’s fucking stupid? if you understand you’re doing it because of that game, then don’t do it???

I get how it can be an unconscious issue but if it’s conscious and you’re still letting it affect your vote you’re just an idiot

I genuinely think admitting this should disqualify his vote, he’s actively acting against the point of the award

  7. > ‘I’m going to have the 6MOY on a team that couldn’t get to the last round of the play-in?’

Even leaving aside the fact that the voting rules explicitly state that it’s a regular season award, this is such a dumb line of thinking on several levels.

Team success should not have any relevance to 6MOY.

He’s not even saying (according to this quote) that he changed his vote based on how Jaquez actually played — just on his team losing.

The Heat were the 10th seed and the underdogs in the play-in game against Charlotte. WTF was he expecting?

  8. 6th man is a stupid award anyway. Why not an award for 2-5th man of the year?

  9. I think it’s very unrealistic to ask 100 people to ignorre what they’re currently watching and let it have no impact on their votes. Whether on purpose or not you’re allowing more data to come in past the buzzer. There has to be a better way to get the votes accurately while waiting for those exception cases.

Or just say that yes, we are including the play ins (which would be a little unfair but is cleaner).

  10. Pretty much every podcaster with a vote I’ve listened to admitted this. Him and Kirk Goldsberry talked about how they changed all nba on his last pod.

  11. I swear on every Zach Lowe podcast they are whining about the 65-game rule and how the league should give them the responsibility as voters but now they can‘t exclude a single game from their votes wothout the league forcing them to? Just go with your picks from before the playin. That‘s a ridiculous statement.

  12. “I voted for him when his team finished the season as the 10th seed, but once his team finished the season as the 10th seed I had to change my vote”

  13. Admitting this should change your ability to vote in the future

I don’t care if Flagg benefited it’s dumb

  14. This is not something you should publicly admit. It should honestly affect whether he has a ballot going forward.

  15. This is the guy who runs a network that has a pretty big influence on how awards voting goes, whether it’s through pushing narratives or actually voting

  16. He also admits he switched his MVP from SGA to Jokic, but that was obviously not because of the Play-In. He described it as like waking up from a fever dream where he was like “What am I doing?! Jokic is the best player on earth.”

  17. LOL but still voting Kon for roty. That’s insane to admit this but ofc nothings gonna happen

  18. You guys are getting big mad about this. It’s just the nature of awards. So many MVPs have been influenced by it playoff performance the year before. Y’all hate AI but then get mad at people for being human

  19. I have repeatedly said that Bill is a biased idiot, but you are kidding yourself if you think he is the only voter that might change their mind after the play-in: he might just be the only one dumb enough to admit it.

I’m pretty sure every other year the votes need to be submitted after game 82. This was only delayed because of the Luka/Cade/Ant appeals of the 65 game rule – because voters apparently got locked out until after the appeal was ruled on. (Not unreasonable as the ballot was changing, but also made it impossible to vote until after the playin).

The only way to stop the play-in effecting votes would’ve been to have that shit sorted beforehand.

  20. I’m going to be honest, every voter who saw the play-in game was at least somewhat influenced by it, Bill’s just the only one saying it out loud. The real problem is the fact that the voting was before the post season began

  21. I feel like he just said this because he’s a Celtics fan and he dislikes the Heat. It’s controversial and drives engagement. It was always going to be an uphill climb for the Heat to make the playoffs.

  22. That’s kinda a dumb reason. I may be bias but Javier was phenomenal this year and should be the winner, bad team or not.

Now this also makes me wonder if this is why bam was left off the DPOY bracket

  23. Bill was tough to listen to on this episode, his complaints about the spurs tshirts because it ruined ” old school basketball” really made me question how out of touch he is

  24. “I ignored the rules” says bill Simmons. “My ego and need for attention also made me tell everyone as well” ok. Someone needs their vote removed.

  25. Take away his vote. He shouldn’t have a vote anyway. He always mentions how he isn’t allowed to gamble on awards because of his vote. But I wouldn’t trust any gambling addict like him to vote on awards.

  26. A lot of the people holding voting privileges should not hold said voting privileges, it’s a joke at this point.

  27. Same guy who refused to vote Jokic MVP over Embiid because “3 straight MVP’s are reserved for greats like Larry Bird”
