  1. Unbelievable. I’m so curious to see what led up to this. I’m shocked to say: thank you Twitter

  2. I like to think right now Howie’s office is filled with smoke and an ash tray filled with half smoked cigarettes and a half of bottle of gin or something on his desk. Man is working. Lets hope CJGJ is next.

  3. Hella excited. I know he’s older, but I’ve been wanting a good CB jersey for awhile. Allllllmost got Asomugha, nearly caved and got Samuel Jr. Tried to get Slay before the super bowl but they were gone. Can’t wait to get that jersey!

  4. Now if we get CJ and hit on these first round picks… we’ll see KC in Vegas for a rematch

  5. CJ if you see this… I will personally give you an extra $200 per year on top of what the birds are offering if you resign

    That should do it

  6. So how much we got left for CJ, our draft picks and that one random player we get in July for a 4th round pick???

  7. This means we aren’t drafting a CB in the first round? New mock drafts loading!

  8. Leave and take a raise on a trash team or run it back, win the Superbowl, and demand whatever contract you want.

  9. So, nothing is set in stone. He’s still overpaid relative to what we should expect from a 32yo DB, given the history at the position. So don’t be surprised if Howie still does something.

While his contract is written though 2026, everything beyond next year is a void year. If we keep him for this season with no changes to his contract, he has a cap hit of $26.1M. That’s significant, but a fair bit of that is prorated bonus money. It’s not like we get that back by cutting/trading him.

If we cut/trade him now with a pre-June 1 designation, his cap hit this year is $22.4M, with a net cap savings of $3.7M. IMO, not worth it. I’d rather have him than the $3.7M.

But if we release or trade him with a post-June 1 designation? Then it’s $8.6M dead money, and $17.5M cap savings.

So, what are the realistic scenarios for Slay and us?

    ##Trade

A pre-June 1 trade can happen. We’d be on the hook for most of the contract. The other team would get an elite but quickly fading corner on a 1-year, $3.7M effective cap hit (we take the rest). I don’t think Howie would do this for a day-3 pick. He’d want a day-2, a player, or a day-3 and a player. This is possible, but not likely.

No one is trading for him post-June 1. No one else is giving Slay $17.5M next year.

    ##Release

Still a possibility. Post-June 1 (again, $17.5M savings) is significant relative to his expected contributions next year. Given the back-and-forth, I don’t think this is the end-goal for Howie, just a point of leverage. I fully expect…

    ##Renegotiated Contract

Howie will want to do two things here. First, he’ll want to reduce the actual amount being paid to Slay. And given the recent turn of events and the clearly non-existent market for Slay, Howie now has the leverage. Expect that $17.5M owed to be reduced into the neighborhood of $12-$15M. That’s some immediate cap savings. Second, expect Howie to convert some to a bonus and add another year or two for cap flexibility. With all of the resignings we’ve had, the upcoming draft picks, and a desire to be able to add more talent prior to the season (like last year), we’re going to need the room.

    ##Play as-is

Not a likely scenario, but if Slay still has SOME leverage that we don’t know about (it’s possible), maybe the two sides agree to play this season out. He becomes a FA and, if he does the unlikely and remains good, maybe gets a new contract and we get a comp pick in 2025.

    ##Final Note

Due to the void structure, we’re taking a cap hit of $13.8m next year for his prorated bonus. AFAIK, there’s no way out of this.

  10. He’s where he belongs. He will have his greatest success here, both as a player and a leader of our defense. Glad it worked out this way, glad to have him!
