  1. There isn’t any value in trashing the team to the media.

Everyone loves a Lee Elia style rant about how terrible everything is. But part of why those rants are memorable is that those teams sucked, got trashed, and continued to suck.

Maybe Buck is reading the riot act to the team in the clubhouse. Who knows, really. Pouting about how much everything sucks to the media never works.

  2. Yeah this isn’t what anyone needs right now. Coddling these dudes ain’t it. Make em runs sprints, hammer in fundamental drills, make them uncomfortable.

  3. As someone who watches other sports: This is the right way. This team before was struggling to produce offensively. If a month ago we had put up 10 runs w multiple HRs by Alvy, we’d be over the moon. As a manager, yes, you are disappointed the series did not produce a W but in the endyou HAVE TO recognize and encourage what DOES trend in the right direction when you have this much of the season left.

  4. Mets need consistent manager that presents the same energy to the media as he does to the clubhouse.

I’m not talking Spoelstra levels of intensity like when he went after Shelburne after that seemingly innocuous Jokic quote which he did apologize for afterwards, but the Mets need someone who doesn’t sugarcoat anything.

Buck sugarcoating the loss will lose the clubhouse, if he hasn’t done so already.

  5. All of the vets are underperforming, and the exciting kids have made it into the lineup *against* his judgement. This team is uninspired and I’m beginning to think *it is* Showalter’s fault.

  6. I get why, like on an emotional level, frustrated fans want managers to act like frustrated fans, but doesn’t it just seem stupid when you think about it?

  7. Buck’s checked out of this shit show. Wouldn’t you? The GM believes AAAA bullpen arms are enough to be competitive.

  8. Yes don’t bash the team to the media. AND YES work on those things that you couldn’t get with the team. Don’t sweep it under the rug and just ride the positives.

Oh and Buck, another thing. Don’t you dare put Vogey back in the lineup tonight.

  9. Back in the MLB 2k games you could hold team meetings and could pick from specific topics. This is a great “make fun of their mommas moment” imo.

(please someone else understand this reference)

  10. I mean there were some positives in this series. If Pete hadn’t been injured and the Braves lost yesterday fans might have been happy coming out of Atlanta with one after Alvarez’s game. It’s just been a really shitty couple of weeks; but Buck is not gonna trash talk the team in the media, doesn’t make much better. Still more likely than not this team makes the playoffs, but ugly couple of weeks.

  11. OP needs to relax. We’re still a wildcard team, and anything can happen in a 5 game series. We need to add 2 closers and a fat bat with our checkbooks before the trade deadline.

If the Phillies can do it last year we can do it this year.

  12. say what you will about buck, but he is good with the media. he obfuscates, uses non-sequiturs, and keeps the mood light by joking around, all to protect his players. he never reveals any private conversations with players. he runs a tight ship.

  13. What do you want him to say? Do you really think he is going to come out and say this team is hot fucking garbage? No, he isn’t going to do that.

The sheer negativity in this sub is overwhelming sometimes. You would think this team had 10 wins. They are 3 under and 3 games out of a playoff spot. They aren’t fucking Oakland.

  14. If he keeps saying stuff like this, he’s just gonna get fired. That sentence makes it sound like he thinks this is all acceptable.

  15. I think (as I said in /r/baseball) that this is Bucks way is saying that the roster is shit. I mean what does he do differently last night as a skipper that changes the game? He’s got nothing in that goddam bullpen to work with

  16. I know we’ll never know what happens behind closed doors…
But God I think the fans could use a Herm Edwards “playoffs” type rant about now…

  17. I get he doesn’t want to trash the team to the media but at the same time he shouldn’t be making comments like this lol

  18. Why would a manager publicly trash his players to the media when they’re struggling instead of having their back???

That would make absolutely no sense as a manager, hes not a sports analyst, hes the leader of the team lol

  19. People also forget Buck did all that media nonsense and was a manager for the Yankees. This man knows exactly what the NY media wants to hear. He ain’t giving it to them.

  20. There are a lot of positives. The only negative is the lack of “Stoppers” in the Bullpen. Alas, it is a big negative.

  21. No need to air dirty laundry to media. But should seem obvious to a baseball lifer like Buck, who’s experienced NY media and fans plenty, not to overly sugar coat with participation trophy affirmations. They’re men, pros, know that winning is the name of the game. You win or you lose. You don’t have to get stuck on the losses, but you have to accept that when you blow multi run leads 3 straight days, that’s the bottom line. Getting the lead is necessary to win. So is keeping the lead. They didn’t keep the lead. So the team didn’t finish the job. Again, doesn’t mean that there has to be lingering shame. Buck could say that taking leads were positive, but that we have to collectively do a better job to finish games out. The boring quotes are the only things that you can say at such time. Don’t unnecessarily flog Smith, Hunter, Ottavino, Robertson after last night… nor unnecessarily praise them. The optics with the latter seems like he doesn’t value results. Let the results simmer. Hopefully the guys are pissed off at getting swept like that, motivated to turn things around. So no need for Buck to amplify bitterness nor sugar coat it for media sake.

  22. 95 percent of all managers are worth somewhere between -2 and +2 wins per 162 games. Nothing he says or does behind doors or in press conferences is affecting games. These aren’t high school kids; they are multi-millionaires.

  23. I totally get not ripping the team cause what’s the point, but this is absurd
