[Mitchell Brown, microstats tracker]Cowan: well-rounded offensive game, dynamite in transition with a combo of pace & patience, great at attacking the inside, and creates space for his teammates (advantages created) at a top-20 rate across the CHL/USHL. Early, But he has 1st-round intelligence.

  1. The vibe I get is that Cowan has limited OHL time, which I’m assuming means he wasn’t looked at as much by scouts. He really came on during the second half of the season, and had a tremendous playoffs.

My guess is that the Leafs believe what he showed in the second half and playoffs projects him much higher than he was listed, again, he just didn’t have enough OHL time/eyes on him to get much traction.

I’m guessing the Leafs are expecting he’ll take a massive leap in the OHL next year, and by the end of next season he’ll be a much more highly touted prospect.

Another would be the Leafs expect his numbers to explode in the OHL next year.

I know fuck all about prospects or grading them, but that’s just my guess.

  2. Common trend by our scouts, drafting intelligence and hockey IQ primarily. Not going to lie and say I didn’t want Cristall, but this looks like a fine pick

  3. I still think this was just the leafs scouts being lazy and went to check out only the knights because the gardens is a short drive from the office.
