We need to sign at least 2 Starting Pitchers

Around the trade deadline, there were some posts here and also people on the radio who only wanted position players. I thought that was a little misguided. Although our position depth is abysmal, don’t overlook our starting pitching. We are 28th in the MLB in Quality Starts. You can’t expect to win games, especially with this offense, with that kind of starting pitching.

So here’s a list of upcoming FA pitchers including ERod. If he opts out, I think we need to sign 2, if he opts in, then maybe just 1 to replace Lorenzen. Then you ride with Skubal and hope Manning and Mize improve and are stable.

Who would you want off this list?

  1. Maybe Flaherty hoping you can get him on a decent deal and he can have a Lorenzen type comeback year.

  2. Pretty sure that Ohtani guy would be a good get.

Jokes aside, I’ve always liked Aaron Nola and Luis Severino could be a Fetter fix-it project if he’s willing.

  3. Manning is terrible right now, and I don’t know how you can count on either Turnbull or Mize. I think you need ERod and another guy, or two guys. That gives you ERod, Skubal, another guy, Mize and Turnbull, with Manning, Faedo, Wentz, and Olsen as depth or bullpen

Fortunately, the SP free agent class is good.

  4. I think you grossly underestimate how much I he cheapskate Chris Illitch is willing to spend. We’ll be lucky to get a couple of SP/RPs from the scrap heap.

  5. I personally think we need 3 starters, and a ton of position starters like 4-5..+

  6. I really am surprised how awful Manning has been. I remember scouts a few years ago saying Manning May end up better than Skubal and Mize. None of the big three has been consistent at all.

  7. Next year best case we have Skubal, Rodriguez, Free agent signing(Nola?), Flores, and hopefully Mize. At its core that’s not a bad rotation next year.

  8. Hitting has to be a priority. If this was a 1 year situation then fine, but this team hasn’t been able to hit in years and we still don’t have like prospects that are gonna change that so like you have a league worse offense with no solution and you’re talking pitching. I’ll accept 28th in quality starts as long as we’re not also 28th in starter ERA and FIP and other meaningful categories.

Also please explain the philosophy behind giving Erod potentially 100 million dollars to continue to be an ace that’s not an ace on one of the worst teams in baseball who cannot hit. Even if Erod wanted to stay here for the remainder of his career how would spending huge on him in FA with a bottom 3 offense make sense
