[Heyman] Yanks were very wise to wrap up the Soto deal when they did, back when the Jays were waiting on Ohtani. Toronto is still looking for a lefthanded power hitter but Soto is no longer an option.

  1. Anyone else thinking this wasn’t a good idea on the Padres’ end? Waiting until Ohtani signed would bring another 2-3 clubs into the bidding no?

  2. Such a dumb take. Assumes the Jays could’ve matched or exceeded and that the Padres were as interested in what the Jays could’ve offered in the first place.

The Padres moved Soto in that deal because they got what they wanted and it was unlikely any team could’ve beaten it. No point waiting it out.

It’s a credit to the Yankees player development that they have these guys to spare but this deal was less about them being ‘smart’ and more about them lucking into the circumstances of the Padres needing to shed the money and the Yanks having/being able to part with what they wanted in return.

  3. The ask was far too great and we don’t have the pieces. They wanted a pitcher heavy package and other than King all the pitchers were 25 or under.

If we compare player values using baseball trade values, then it’s comparable to Tiedemann (King), Manoah (Thorpe), Mayza & Watts-Brown (Vasquez & Brito), and Lopez (Higashioka – used a position player with similar value since our catchers are far more valuable than Higashioka)

  4. Hey thanks, Captain Obvious! Where were you when Ohtani was so obviously using the Jays to squeeze an extra 200 mill out of the Dodgers?

  5. Ah yes, so wise to deal with the only people they seemingly could during the winter meetings. Choke harder on that Yankee rod, Heyman.
