  1. This sucks, but shit happens…it’s still a talented team and other guys will need to step up.

  2. “wide range of possibilities” and “we hope to have Matt back this season” scream “he’s out for the season and we don’t want fans to stop buying McLain stuff”. I really hope I’m wrong but at this point I’m not expecting to see him back

  3. Nightmare injury. Possible career alter-er.

Labrum repair means he’s out for the year most likely, and combined with cartilage removal…

*Stop diving in spring training, it’s not worth it holy fuck*

EDIT: Some of you are downvoting me because I’m not being blindly optimistic, but seriously, take a look at how shoulder injuries impact hitters. It’s one of the absolute worst things that can happen, despite being to his “non-throwing arm”.

  4. “Good thing we have all these prospects to call up”

“Wait, where the fuck did they all go?”

  5. I love that the team thought they were pulling a fast one on us with the “we’re getting a second opinion on this”….yeah fn right. You knew he was gonna have the surgery, and you knew he’d be out for the year. Just come out and say it. And while you’re at it, maybe monitor these guys and make sure they’re conditioning properly and not making idiotic plays in a ST game

  6. “We couldn’t overcome the injuries our roster sustained, but we look forward to getting everyone healthy and watching this young talent progress into 2025.”

  7. I’m not saying I believe in curses

But I think I’m starting to believe in curses

  8. Guess I’ll go ahead and snipe the under 15.5 wins through April again before it moves on draft kings. This sucks so bad. Between this the bengals and Kentucky basketball the last few months have been terrible sports wise for me

  9. Damn, out of all the stellar Reds rookies last year, McLain was the one who excited me the most. Love his style of play. Hoping for the best case scenario for him.

  10. He’s definitely out for the season. Maybe, possibly, not likely, back for the playoffs if we make it. India’s gotta step up and make the most of this second chance as a starting infielder.

  11. Knew this was coming. They wanted the second opinion because the first opinion said surgery.

  12. Just being realistic, if you subtract McClain from at least 50% of the regular season games, this team has close to a 0% shot of being over .500 without players progressing from last year. They lost Noelvi Marte for over half the season as well, and he was projected to be a several WAR’s worth player. Every above average team has several players who can put up close to 4 bWAR, and this leaves a team outside of Spencer Steer and TJ Friedl who have shown that’s possible.

Elly will need to breakout, and the Reds would need several people like Will Benson, Jonathan India and Tyler Stephenson to progress. I think India will produce close to 3 WAR this season and expect better production. That’s just the offensive side, but the starting rotation is the real issue if they can’t step up. None of their options have proven themselves to be a consistent #2 even, and all of them are injury risks.

The minor league teams are fine and this gives room for guys like Ricardo Cabrera and Leonardo Balcazar to step up as SS prospects in lieu of Edwin Arroyo’s season ending. Will be interesting to see how Rhett Lowder, Ty Floyd, Chase Petty and Connor Phillips look. I’d say the Reds need at least two minor league pitchers to succeed as a #2 minimum for them to have any chance of success in the next 2-3 years.
