23/30 rankers reporting this week. /R/NBA's Power Rankings are published every two weeks which is a bit different from most rankings. Other than that we rank the teams the same way as our competition. We will be looking for new Chicago, Miami and Sacramento rankers.
| # | Team | Δ | Record | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Thunder | 0-0 | The Oklahoma City Thunder are the defending champs, and no team has been better prepared to defend their title since the KD/Steph Warriors. Many doubters are going to be in for a bit of a surprise as they realize that the 24-25 Thunder are the worst that this team will be. Barring disaster, it's hard to see the Thunder be as injured as they were last year. Combine that with the natural growth of a VERY young team – I expect Mark Daigneualt to once again squeeze another level of development from every player on the roster, Shai included. |
Nuggets | 0-0 | It's year 12 and Unc here is happy to be back again for some more power rankings. After the chaos that ensued in the final week of last season, with the canning of both coach Michael Malone and GM Calvin Booth, and the surprising playoff run that followed which included a 7-game conference semis against the eventual champs, Nuggets Nation entered the offseason with a mix of anxiety and excitement as we waited to see which direction the Kroenkes would go. Ultimately they opted to stay in house with their coaching and FO options, keeping the unusual GM duo of Ben Wallace (Ben Tenzer and Jon Wallace) and coach David Adelman. Ben Wallace quickly addressed the lack of rotational depth by bringing back Brucey B, as well as adding Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jonas Valanciunas, who will all provide some much needed experience and skill for a bench unit which was nearly non-existent last year. To facilitate these moves, the Nuggets off loaded social media star Michael Porter Jr. to the Nets, and brought back a very capable replacement in Cam Johnson who should slot nicely into the starting five. With a new coach and his new schemes, and a retooled roster which is arguably the deepest Nuggets team of the Jokic era, expectations are high in Denver, and we'll see if it's enough to dethrone OKC in the West. |
Knicks | 0-0 | "We believe that we can change the things around us in accordance with our desires- we believe it because otherwise we can see no favourable outcome. We do not think of the outcome which generally comes to pass and is also favourable: we do not succeed in changing things in accordance with our desires, but gradually our desires change. The situation that we hoped to change because it was intolerable becomes unimportant to us. We have failed to surmount the obstacle, as we were absolutely determined to do, but life has taken us round it, led us beyond it, and then if we turn round to gaze into the distance of the past, we can barely see it, so imperceptible has it become." –Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time. Mr. Proust, with his quiet earthquake of prose, leads us down the path of retrospective surprise. Those ineffable qualities we thought our obstacles… simply weren't. I've been a fan of this team since before I could walk. My dad, an immigrant staunchly unfamiliar with American culture, took my toddler self to watch the Knickerbockers lose. It didn't matter- Madison Square Garden had captured our hearts. Since that first beautiful memory, I've been to about 25 Knicks games. Until recently, they too had all been losses. I remember thinking Starbury was the Missing piece. Then Melo. Then Amar'e. Then Porzingis. Then- God help me- Frank Ntilikina. Sports fandom does funny things to our sense of hope. We reach that psychological cliff where hope and desperation meet, and in the fashion of Wile E. Coyote we find ourselves a good ten yards off the edge before we realize that the comedy of sheer will has kept us afloat. We look at the camera, gulp, and plummet. This year, I look back (almost) fondly at the days where I knew I was being delusional. Where I'd draw the ire of this subreddit by boldly declaring that this was the year Frank Ntilikina would push us over the edge. There are no threads left to pull, no bottom to feed from. There are expectations, standards and drive. I simply can't wait to see what happens. |
Cavaliers | 0-0 | As a second apron team, this year will be definitive for this core. It’s hard to imagine that next season will be anything but a minor retooling to avoid the dreaded multi-year second apron status penalties, so with that said, I’d hope that fans of good basketball are praying the Cavs stay healthy because when this team was firing on all cylinders last season, it was a spectacle. The additions of Lonzo Ball and Larry Nance Jr. are two do-it-all glue guys, joining a team that have plenty of players who can put the ball in the hoop. Meanwhile, Craig Porter Jr. and our 2024 first round pick Jaylon Tyson will need to step up in the immediate while we wait for Darius Garland and Max Strus to return from injuries sustained in the playoffs and offseason. De’Andre Hunter looked incredible this preseason, averaging 32.7 points per 36 minutes played, and his scoring will be invaluable for the Cavs until their injury woes die down. Evan Mobley must also continue his advancement of his offensive game. Kenny Atkinson came into last season talking about Evan’s usage rate: it was too low @ ~20.5% for each of his first 3 seasons. His efficiency increased while that usage rate went up to 23.2%, which brought him up to the Bobby Portis level of usage. Other star bigs like Jaren Jackson and Wemby are between a 27.5-30% usage rate, and we need to see Mobley push that range. |
Rockets | 0-0 | The 2025-26 Houston Rockets season: Kevin Durant joins the youth movement, a sentence that makes both Durant's knees and the concept of a "youth movement" question their life choices. With Fred VanVleet out, it's Amen Thompson's turn to run point, so expect an offense that's either a beautiful ballet or a glorious car crash. They've added some grizzled veterans, because nothing says "championship contender" like relying on a 37-year-old and hoping for the best. |
TWolves | 0-0 | After back to back Western Conference finals finishes the Wolves want more this season. Whether they can get there is a different story. With no offseason additions and loss of key contributor Nickeil Alexander-Walker the Wolves are going to rely on continuity and growth from young players to reach their goals. With the intention to run at a faster pace and Anthony Edwards developing mid range their is optimism they've built enough offense to reach their stated goals. |
Clippers | 0-0 | Being a Clippers fan is just about the funniest thing one can do to themselves; you survive decades of shit basketball, finally have a decade of consistency, and then all of a sudden you wake up and you gotta support fraud now. Now ignoring the tree-sized elephant in the room, the Clips walk gingerly into the new season as literally the oldest team in NBA history, with an average age of 33.2 years old. The Unction is alive and well in the Intuit Dome, and no one is bringing that average up higher than Clippers legend-turned villains-turned legend Chris Paul. The former Lob City captain who would later eliminate us from our best shot at a ring, NAME REDACTED 3 is finally bowing down to the Retirement God, and he is spending his twilight year back in LA. The Chris Paul signing, while admittedly very cool and heartwarming, is also a statement: we don't have a lot of time left with this core (whether it be via league punishment or from old age), so might as well have fun with it. Bradley Beal will try to take on Norman Powell's (fly high my Jamaican king) role at the 2, and while there are injury concerns for him, there are injury concerns for pretty much everyone on the team too so he fits right in if anything. My Croatian demon Big Zu will finally have some backup in Brook Lopez, and John Collins looks like he will be a good spark at the 4, but how far we go this year will always depend upon Kawhi and Harden. Harden undeniably carried us through all of last season, he essentially operated the offense by himself and still looked to be able to score when needed, but he had a rough series against Denver in the playoffs and we have to hear tales of Playoff Harden for another year. Kawhi has seemed to have curled a monkey's paw in the offseason, as his first healthy start to a season in a while has been overshadowed by his ongoing tree company fraud investigation. Times have somehow become more unsure for the Clippers despite a strong regular season last year, and with the fanbase understandably getting more restless for playoff success, we will just have to wait and see how and if these hold up. |
Magic | 0-0 | A new season begins after a major newsworthy offseason. With probably the blockbuster trade of the year, Desmond Bane joins the Magic as a perennial 20/5/5 guy and looks to give the team their much needed solution to 3pt shooting and spacing. KCP leaves after a tumultuous season and fan favorite Cole Anthony is also gone after 5 up and down years. Franz Wagner and Tristan da Silva return as Eurobasket 2025 champions, while Goga Bitadze showcased growth across his entire game as he led Georgia to a surprising quarterfinals appearance. Paolo Banchero signed a max contract extension over the summer and is looking to cement himself as a top 10 player this season. Wendell Carter Jr and Jonathan Isaac both had healthy offseasons and, if the preseason is any indication, looked ready to put a disappointing 2024 season in the rearview mirror. Coach Jamahl Mosley is already in early talks to be a Coach of the Year candidate, with the Magic themselves getting a ton of buzz to make some noise this season. So is this the season they finally take that leap? Guess we'll just have to wait and see. |
Lakers | 0-0 | The 2025-26 Los Angeles Lakers enter a new era, pairing Luka Dončić with LeBron James under head coach JJ Redick. After acquiring Dončić mid-season last year, they've added key pieces like Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to boost depth and defense. A major question mark is the health of LeBron, who missed time with sciatica, and how he and Dončić will co-exist offensively. The team must maximize its star window while building around Dončić for the future. |
Warriors | 0-0 | The Warriors ran back back most of last years team which was a borderline contender when firing on all cylinders. The summertime stand off between Kuminga and the Warriors ended with Kuminga getting a sizable contract but not one he wanted. So far Kuminga has played with some additional fire and Kerr has actually complemented it so I'm optimistic on the rise of JK. Outside of running it back Warriors signed Horford who should provide some spacing for Draymond line ups. Age and injuries are this teams biggest obstacles and only (father) time will tell. |
Pistons | 0-0 | Did you guys hear about the first team to triple their wins from the prior season? Detroit is poised to establish themselves for the first time since they tore down the Going To Work squad. They have a budding superstar in Cade Cunningham who dominated in his limited minutes in the preseason shooting 22/35 with a 72.9% eFG, scoring 62 points in 61 minutes while also having a 3.6:1 Assist:Turnover ratio. Yes, it was preseason, but he was getting any look that he wanted. Look for him to firmly entrench himself in MVP talks and win over many fans with his on court play this season. Gone is Malik Beasley who had the 2nd most 3 point makes in the NBA last year. In his place look for Duncan Robinson and Caris LeVert to absorb many of these looks while also having better all-around games. The loss will be minimal. Look for a defensive minded team with players like Ausar Thompson, Isaiah Stewart, and Ron Holland all having motors that don't quit. One of the bigger questions will be if Jalen Duren can play with consistent effort himself (something he noted he lacked earlier on last season). If he can develop smarter defensive play with consistent effort it would be massive for this team. Jaden Ivey is out with a knee injury for at least the first month or so of the season, but their stellar 2nd half of last season came after his (unrelated) injury that caused him to miss the remainder of the year. I question our long term need for him given the lack of an extension. Oh yeah, Tobias Harris still is here too – steady as ever. Look for this team to start the first 2 weeks playing roughly 0.500 ball but to then go on a hot streak where they could have a record close to 0.700 a month into the season if they beat teams they are better than on paper. |
Hawks | 0-0 | If I had to describe the moves that the Hawks have made over the offseason with a single word, it'd be opportunistic. "Sure, we'll take Kristaps Porzingis from you so that you can shed salary while getting off the Mann contract." "Oh, you can't afford to pay NAW? How does a sign and trade sound?" "You're offering WHAT to move up 10 spots?" Onsi Saleh has picked up the scraps from teams that were forced to shed players due to the CBA and constructed a team that is, by my measure, the best roster the Hawks have had since the 2014-15 60 win team. Nickeil Alexander-Walker gives the team another smothering defensive guard/wing alongside Dyson Daniels, letting them play 48 minutes with a smothering defender on the perimeter. He can also handle the ball a little bit, alleviating pressure off of Trae and giving second units some hope on that front. Kristaps Porzingis gives the team a big that can create offense in the half-court, something that the team hasn't had in the Trae era. He also can pair well with either Jalen Johnson or Onyeka Okongwu, giving the team flexibility with their front court that they've been lacking for seasons. Luke Kennard is a question defensively, but gives the team another ball handler and shooter when Trae is off the court. All three of their offseason additions are also legit shooters (NAW shot 38.1% on 4.5 3pa, KP 41.2% on 6, Kennard 43% on 4), giving the roster a much needed injection of shooting talent. Zaccharie Risacher and Onyeka Okongwu are both looking to build off of strong finishes to the end of last season, and Dyson Daniels returns from his MIP/DPOY runner-up campaign to strike terror in ball handlers across the NBA. But in my opinion, the biggest addition the Hawks made this offseason was Jalen Johnson returning from injury. Jalen looks healthy, stronger than ever, and the team has started to experiment with him bringing the ball up the court more on offense. This is looking like the Jalen that has been promised, and if he can stay healthy I think he has a really strong case of being an all-star this season. That brings me to the maestro of this roster, Trae Young. I'm going to be frank. Aside from better shooting from Dyson/Zacch/Jalen, this is probably the platonic ideal of a roster built around Trae Young. I have high hopes for this team with Trae at the helm. However, health is a legitimate concern given KP prolonged and Jalen's recent history. But if this team can stay relatively healthy, I legitimately think that this could be a dark horse title contender. |
Bucks | 0-0 | After another first-round playoff exit, I did not anticipate being excited for the Bucks this season. However, Jon Horst pulled off an offseason masterclass by not only signing the biggest free agent in the class, Miles Turner, but also bringing back everyone I had hoped we could retain, and for less than any Bucks fan would have guessed it'd cost. This will be the most athletic and youthful Bucks team Giannis has ever played with, and I can't wait to see how it goes — expect to see the biggest numbers yet from the Greek Freak (he averaged 32/12/8 down the stretch with Dame out last season). On the negative side, Doc and Kuzma are both still huge potential liabilities (but at least Kuz has been moved to the bench and Doc's preseason lineups were great), and if Giannis gets hurt, the whole heliocentric system we are building falls apart completely. The goal for the season should be a top 4 seed in the East, but either overachieving or underachieving wouldn't be a surprise given how the roster's constructed. |
Spurs | 0-0 | The ever-agonizing offseason is finally over and basketball is back! It figures to be an exciting year for Spurs fans; Wemby is healthy and looks like he hasn't missed a beat, our guard rotation seems positively competent this year (a refreshing departure from the last several years), and overall the roster just looks like it…makes sense? The team went 5-0 in preseason, its first undefeated preseason in ~30 years, and overall the roster looked very capable, even in our bench minutes. Beyond Wemby, the stars of our preseason games were Luke Kornet (who shot 23-29 from the field), Julian Champagnie (who shot 19-30 from three) and Keldon Johnson (who shot 70% from the field). Dylan Harper looked poised like a veteran in his game action, and Stephon Castle looks like he'll be ready to start at PG for the team to begin the year while we wait for Fox to heal up. My prediction is that the Spurs finish with ~48 wins and the 6 seed, but I could see them finish as high as ~53 wins and 4 seed or as low as 44 seed and 9/10 seed. There's a ton more narratives surrounding the team, but we can get into those throughout the season; for now, I'm excited to catch some Roundball Rock and relive my childhood. The Spurs have @DAL, @NOP, BKN, TOR, MIA, @PHX, @LAL, HOU (Cup), and NOP to open the season. |
Mavericks | 0-0 | The Mavs enter the season with very little guard play, with Kyrie sidelined until around the all star break, give or take. D'Lo will get a majority of the playmaking responsibilities, and the Mavs may run some point Flagg. While this sounds fun in theory, rookies playing out of position at point guard don't usually help translate that experiment into wins. Cooper is a phenomenal talent, but is best played as a forward, and should deservedly be the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. The Mavs' jumbo roster with minimal cohesion across the board could cause them problems early though, which could eventually help spell the end of Nico's time in Dallas |
Celtics | 0-0 | For the first time in almost a decade the pressure and desperate "god I hope we win" feeling just isn't there. Tatum is presumably out for the season, Jaylen Brown tweaked his hamstring in preseason and is questionable for the season opener, there was a fire sale to get under the second apron, and the team is suddenly reminiscent of those mid 2010's teams where it was mostly a group of dudes thrown together with no real expectations. We have the worst big man rotation in the league this season, but fans get to dream of tanking for a draft pick and hoping someone like 2nd round rookie Amari Williams shows off, or that Neemias Queta gets unleashed. We get to see our 1st round draft pick from Europe actually come over and play in the NBA instead of staying overseas as a draft and stash. We'll get to see if Jordan Walsh can put things together in a larger role, if Baylor Scheierman can continue to build on what he did last year, and we'll get to see whatever the heck Anfernee Simons can do. This is finally the season where expectations just don't exist. Do we suck and get a top 5 pick? Cool. Do we claw together enough wins to still make the playoffs in the East? Good god imagine how insufferable we'll be, talking about how good we'll be once Tatum is back. Basketball is back and I can't fucking wait. |
Grizzlies | 0-0 | The Grizzlies head into 2025-26 with a brand new European coach and the same gameplan: survive until Ja Morant shows up. After trading Desmond Bane, they've now officially put all their scoring eggs into a basket that spends as much time on the bench as on the court. It's an exciting strategy that relies on Ja playing 70 games and not being sued. |
Pacers | 0-0 | June 22, 2025. The Pacers' 2024-25 season effectively ended end the first quarter of game 7 of the NBA Finals as Tyrese Haliburton's achilles tendon ruptured, sapping the energy from Indiana. For all intents and purposes, that also rendered the upcoming 2025-26 season a wash; it will be virtually impossible for Indiana to replicate their offensive prowess without their all-NBA point guard. But if coach Rick Carlisle has taught us anything, it's that he's capable of taking any group of players and turning them into a more-than-capable unit. This year is all about growth- growth from Andrew Nembhard, Bennedict Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson, Johnny Furphy, and others. Whatever else happens is gravy. |
76ers | 0-0 | The definition of insanity is doing the same thing, and expecting a different result. This quote isn't being applied to the roster, the coaching, management, direction or anything. Instead, this is for all the fans like myself that have once again managed to talk ourselves into the Sixers. No statement can be said without a ? after it. Embiid looks good right now… but can he stay healthy? Can PG come back from injury and play the role we want him to play? Will Maxey bounce back from a down year? Just how much of an impact can VJ Edgecomb play? This is a season of questions, so I guess it's only fitting they bring back the black jerseys once worn by The Answer. |
Heat | 0-0 | The Heat, fresh off their first sub-.500 season in years, traded "Heat Culture" cornerstone Jimmy Butler for Andrew Wiggins and Norman Powell. With Bam Adebayo now the lone star and Tyler Herro hurt, they're leaning heavily on "vibes" and Erik Spoelstra's ability to turn late-season resilience into an actual playoff run. They have a great deal of "Culture," and a great need for "competitiveness". |
Trail Blazers | 0-0 | It's an exciting time in Portland. Dame is back, the young core is locked up long-term, and they have an exciting new rookie who brings approximately a billion new fans with him. Time will tell if it all pans out, but Blazer fans are going into this season in a very positive mood. |
Raptors | 0-0 | I'm just excited to watch games that matter man. We the North! |
Bulls | 0-0 | The Bulls begin the 2025-26 season with a promising young core of Josh Giddey, Matas Buzelis, and Coby White. Freshly extended Giddey will have the keys to a team that's finally committed to a future that doesn't involve clinging to its past. Chicago also traded a finally-healthy Lonzo Ball for Isaac Okoro. Still, they remain committed to Nikola Vucevic, a man whose defensive abilities are best described as "polite and not a total traffic cone." So, another competitive-but-ultimately-mediocre season feels right. |
Kings | 0-0 | "We can be certain last weekends protest were about the Sacramento Kings. The Sacramento Kings' season hinges on whether the new ""win-now"" additions of aging stars Zach LaVine and Russell Westbrook can peacefully coexist with a ""triple-double threat but defensive liability"" in Domantas Sabonis. The Kings hope that this ""mid-range and chaos"" offense will somehow be more effective than their previous ""just okay"" version, and that Keegan Murray's injury doesn't stop him from being their only three-point shooter. |
Pelicans | 0-0 | The Summer of the Meme came to life when Zion joined Luka with their impressive body transformations. Now Z needs to put it together for an entire season, and play his first playoff games. It will be interesting to see how Jordan Poole fits into the rotation, especially once Dejounte Murray is back after the All-Star break. Speaking of All-Stars, Trey Murphy has the potential to break out this year. His success along with the return of Herb Jones will be crucial for any team success. Will Yves Missi prove to be the answer at center? He remains raw but showed flashes last year and led all rookies in rebounding. Can Kevon Looney help him take the next step? |
Suns | 0-0 | After last season’s abomination, I just want to not hate my team. While Ishbia gets no love for putting us in this situation, the rebound this offseason has restored some optimism. The new FO non-stop from day 1 preached ⋆。°✩ Alignment✩°。⋆ in building this team. What they delivered through the pre-season is a young, tough, athletic, and defensively minded roster/scheme around Booker. One that will hopefully be super annoying for teams that expect them to roll over and die. Any return to relevance this decade will entirely depend on how well the young players develop and how quickly everything comes together. Expectations are very low, but maybe they can surprise us. Suns fans, are you aligned? |
Hornets | 0-0 | The team's strategy is basically "just keep adding wings and hope LaMelo's ankles don't stage a coup." After stocking up on more shooters than a pro-wrestler's contract signing, the team is banking on a healthy LaMelo Ball and some rookie magic. Still, with Miles Bridges and a carousel of "veterans" around, mediocrity is more likely than a playoff run. |
Nets | 0-0 | Another year of tanking is coming for Brooklyn but this time they're poised with 5 first round rookies and two bonafide chuckers in MPJ and Cam Thomas. Last year, Jordi was able to get proven vets like Cam Johnson, Dennis Schroder, and Dorian Finney-Smith to rally the team to a few early wins which put them out of contention for the worst record in the league.. After some trades, however, the roster looked shaky and started to lose games as everyone expected. It looks like Marks learned his lesson as this roster is young and very likely to lose a lot of games as they develop their rookies. There's hope among the fanbase that guys like Claxton and MPJ may be traded which would only lead to more losses as those two could help win-now roster but regardless, this team is going to lose. A lot. |
Wizards | 0-0 | This is a very bad team. This was a team that could not run a basic half court set with four rotational members in the previous season against the summer league Suns team. Do not let any international game hype fool you, do not let one game of pre season Kyshawn George fool you. This won't be a season of progression, it will be a season of reality checks. It'll be the first time where people have to have a legitimate conversation surrounding what Bilal Coulibaly's potential actually is. It'll be the first time where Brian Keefe has to answer for lapses in judgement with his line-up and rotation management. And it'll be the first season where Michael Winger and Will Dawkins have to address weaknesses in point guard and center depth with their stockpile of wings and a point guard-less schematic that simply does not work. The Wizards continue to hit with quick wins — adding CJ McCollum, Cam Whitmore and a returning Marvin Bagley III. But the idea of a future — even if you're high on talent like Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George and Tre Johnson — still feels fuzzy. This will be one of the worst teams in basketball. They like to think their shit don't stank but lean a little bit closer, roses smell like boo boo. Washington will lure people into a false hope with effort and grit but the skill discrepancy and coaching capability should sink them into the bottom of the rankings — even if they blow their tank more than a team like Brooklyn. |
Jazz | 0-0 | I still can't believe Ace Bailey fell to us at 5. This season is going to be the make-or-break season for a lot of our young guys. Will Keyonte George be an effective shooter/playmaker? Will Isaiah Collier develop a decent jumper? Does Markkanen get traded midseason? Will Cody Williams show that he has at least 1 NBA level skill? Will Taylor Hendricks be a legit two-way player? Will Ace Bailey be the best rookie for us since Donovan Mitchell? Lots of questions. Good news for fellow Jazz Fans, this is more than likely the last season of the tank. Got to guarantee us that top 8 pick so it doesn't convey to OKC, then we can finally start being competitive. At least this season we get to enjoy one of the best jerseys in the league.
