Brilliant team defense to nullify the Magic closing the game! Maxey in the 3rd and PG in the 4th offensively were BEAUTIFUL to watch. That 1st half made damn near everyone’s shooting stats look horrendous 😭
Let’s get the negative out of the way first:
-If we are playing anyone other than the Orlando Magic last night, we are down 25-30 at half. Best case is that both teams forgot how to shoot, worst case is we play down to our opponent (great teams do not do that). As good a team as we have, the only game thus far we have truly controlled jump to end was the last Knicks game.
-With our steals up, we have to capitalize on fast break and transition points. We are too good defensively and too fast as a team to be blowing the points at the other end nullifying our good D.
Positives:
-As a Rookie, VJ is not a live or die by the points he scores type of player- he adds more to the team with defense, rebounds and steals. It pleases me that he has that sort of game already and does not live and die by his shot/points alone.
-PG has finally bought in. I don’t care about health, age, etc… he was here for a check. Something flipped in him, he sees it and he is engaged and locked in. He is not delivering 30-40, but he is being a vocal proponent of team defense, leading by example and the team is rallying behind it. He has another level in him, that when he flips the switch on D, it makes him look like a grown ass man defending a child, and it’s almost like he can suffocate or rip the ball at will in those moments. Being a huge fan of defense- this makes me happy.
This next stretch is a test, the true make or break leading up to the all star break, and with the Knicks in a damn near free fall (they are close to a crisis) now is our time to strike to move up to a better rank in the east.
